One of the nine canonical Greek lyric poets, Pindar has enjoyed a brilliant reputation since antiquity. Notoriously challenging but widely respected, Pindar's poetry has been increasingly studied in modern times. In the late nineteenth century, C. A. M. Fennell (1843-1916), a classicist and Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge, turned his attention to Pindar's Nemean and Isthmian odes. First published in 1883 but released in a new edition in 1899, this book features an introduction focusing on the practical aspects of the pentathlon, which sets a good grounding for the comprehension of the odes themselves. Touching on metrical structure, this edition then presents each ode in its original Greek, accompanied by an individual, detailed introduction and full commentary. This fascinating work will be of value to advanced students of Greek grappling with the intricacies of Pindar's complex poetry.

La fiaba di un eroe corinzio, il forte Bellerofonte: di come un giorno domò il gran corsiero alato, Pegaso, con lˈaiuto di briglie vedute in sogno eppure vere: un regalo di Atena nel cuore della notte. È il poeta Pindaro (V secolo a. C.) a raccontarcela in versi composti per onorare un suo ricchissimo committente di nome Senofonte, corinzio anchˈegli e doppio vincitore olimpico: per esprimere, anzi, i valori e le ambizioni di tutta una società in cui la gloria degli antichi eroi guerrieri – cavalieri librati in aria, uccisori di Chimere, sterminatori di eserciti selvaggi – si perpetua nelle forme spettacolari dellˈatletismo, che della guerra è la stilizzazione incruenta. E intorno al racconto incantato prende corpo unˈode monumentale, lˈopera di un poeta per nulla meno ambizioso del suo committente, che dopo molti secoli ci chiede di apprezzarne in profondo la complessità dei significati politici, la rarità della tecnica versificatoria (senza paralleli nel corpus dei componimenti pindarici) e il non scalfito fascino letterario.
