Le présent de l'indicatif mérite une nouvelle approche, qui permette de repenser sa valeur modale dans les cas où la référence temporelle n'est pas pertinente. Ainsi, dans certains énoncés écrits, sans correspondants à l'oral et à vocation « non communicationnelle », le présent ne renvoie pas à un évènement singulier, ayant lieu à l'instant de parole ou à un autre instant sur l'axe temporel. Il permet de construire un « prototype » situationnel : le procès rédigé au présent est alors un procès non actualisé, non réel mais exemplaire d'une classe ; il admet un ensemble de réalisations en saisie paradigmatique.Cette valeur « prototypante » du présent s'observe particulièrement bien dans les exemples philosophiques, les textes de loi et les brouillons de textes narratifs. Mais elle n'est attribuable à ce tiroir verbal qu'au sein d'appareils formels complexes, conditionnés par le statut pragmatique spécifique de certains énoncés.
