Abstract

The second volume dedicated to the 42nd International Conference of the Unione Italiana per il Disegno takes up the theme of 'Connecting' in reflecting on the topic Drawing: Languages, Distances, Technologies, also suggested by the remote condition that made it impossible for us to meet physically, and prompted and relaunched the conference itself. Languages, distances, technologies lead us to constantly review the dynamics that regulate the connections with drawing, and the historical and social context that in the last year and a half has characterized it. Drawing and visual Languages seen in the light of the multiple articulations that derive from them. Like a metaphor for language, drawing alludes, illudes, reveals and deceives. Drawing and Distances brings us to the practices of surveying, but also to the meaning of the word distancing, with all that it implies, to help us overcome the insurmountable physical separateness. Drawing and Technologies leads to the evidence of the digital world, viewed in its implications with the different sciences, transforming the computer from an instrument of calculation into an expressive source of communication, even artistic, for the development of a new digital aesthetic. In this volume, disciplines are intertwined, and even research sectors: a perfect path of contamination in which very different competencies come into play. And thus these three words, 'languages', 'distances', 'technologies', create a perfect circle that, rotating around drawing in a synchronous and often overlapping way, resumes and relaunches connections for creating new and ancient drawings.

Abstract

Erstmals in der Geschichte des Schweizer Corpus Vitrearum sind im Band zum Kanton Thurgau auch die Glasmalereien des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts erfasst. Während die Erforschung der vor 1800 geschaffenen Glasgemälde Erkenntnisse zum Stiftungswesen in einem von den eidgenössischen Orten gemeinsam verwalteten Gebiet bringt, lässt sich anhand der jüngeren Werke der handwerkliche und künstlerische Betrieb zur Zeit des Historismus, des Jugendstils und der Moderne beleuchten. Die Auswertung der Kirchgemeindearchive lieferte detaillierte Einsichten in die Entstehungsgeschichte dieser Glasmalereien. Der vorliegende Textband ergänzt den auf der open access-Plattform des Vitrocentre Romont vitrosearch.ch erschienenen Katalog der rund 1.100 Glasgemälde des 14. bis 21. Jahrhunderts. For the first time in the history of the Swiss Corpus Vitrearum, this volume on the Canton of Thurgau also includes glass paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. Whereas the study of the pre-1800 glass works provided insights into the traditions of donating stained glass in the Old Swiss Confederacy, a consideration of the more recent glass paintings sheds light on the aesthetic and technological aspects of stained-glass manufacturing during the period of historicism, art nouveau, and modernism. This includes an evaluation of sources from parish archives, yielding information on the origins of these younger stained-glass windows. The text volume complements a catalogue of more than 1,100 glass paintings from the 14th to the 21st century, published on the open-access platform of the Vitrocentre Romont (vitrosearch.ch).

Cette monographie constitue une étude sur la période fondatrice de la revue satirique illustrée suisse Der Nebelspalter du début de sa parution, en 1875, jusqu'en 1921, soit durant l'âge d'or européen des revues. Il s'agit de retracer la complexité, la place et le rôle de ce monument de la culture helvétique alors que se constitue le champ artistique suisse et que s'engage, par ailleurs, un dialogue international entre des revues se situant à la croisée des mondes artistique et littéraire.

Abstract

This volume captures the status of digital humanities within the Arts in South Africa. The primary research methodology falls within the broader tradition of phenomenological hermeneutics, with a specific emphasis on visual hermeneutics. Some of the tools utilised as part of the visual hermeneutic methods are geographic information system (GIS) mapping, sensory ethnography and narrative pathways. Digital humanities is positioned here as the necessary engagement of the humanities with the pervasive digital culture of the 21st century. It is posited that the humanities and arts, in particular, have an essential role to play in unlocking meaning from scientific, technological and data-driven research. The critical engagement with digital humanities is foregrounded throughout the volume, as this crucial engagement works through images. Images (as understood within image studies) are not merely another form of text but always more than text. As such, this book is the first of its kind in the South African scholarly landscape, and notably also a first on the African continent. Its targeted audience include both scholars within the humanities, particularly in the arts and social sciences. Researchers pursuing the new field of digital humanities may also find the ideas presented in this book significant. Several of the chapters analyse the question of dealing with digital humanities through representations of the self as viewed from the Global South. However, it should be noted that self-representation is not the only area covered in this volume. The latter chapters of the book discuss innovative ways of implementing digital humanities strategies and methodologies for teaching and researching in South Africa.
