Europa, so behauptete Bismarck gegenüber seiner Tochter, würde von ihm »stets in 10 bis 15 Minuten beim ersten Frühstück abgemacht, gekämmt und gebürstet«. Aber wie sah seine Politik in Europa nach der Reichsgründung aus? Bismarck hatte Europa nachhaltig verändert. Aus dem Unruhestifter Europas wurde ein Mann auf der Suche nach europäischer Stabilität. Wie gelang es ihm, sie zu erreichen? Diese Frage scheint aktueller denn je in einer Zeit, in der wir selbst nach neuer Stabilität in Europa suchen. Unter Rückgriff auf Bismarcks berühmtes Diktum »Who is Europe?« fragt der Band danach, wie Europa in seiner Ära politisch, ökonomisch bzw. kulturell definiert wurde. Er untersucht militärische und ökonomische Strategien des deutschen Aufstiegs in Europa, beleuchtet Bismarcks Suche nach Stabilität mit Hilfe sicherheitspolitischer Bündnissysteme bzw. trans- oder supranationaler ökonomischer Institutionen. Indem er seine Einstellungen gegenüber den übrigen Teilen der Welt beleuchtet, weitet der Band die eurozentrierte Perspektive ins Globale und gewinnt so neue Einsichten in Bismarcks Europaverständnis.

Whenever the British Press wants to attack the Royal Family, they make a jibe about "their foreign roots". The Royals- as they say- are simply a posh version of German invaders. But did German relatives really influence decisions made by any British monarchs or are they just an "imagined community", invented by journalists and historians?
