The essays in this monograph deal with a subject which has attracted too little attention : the political issues implicit in the southern enlargement of the European community. Spain broadens the Community's diplomatic horizons to the Spanish-speaking world, especially Latin America, Greece its involvements in the Balkans and eastern Mediterranean. This brings opportunities and also problems. Spain's nationalism, like that of France and Britain, her sense of her mediating role between North and South and her internal dissensions over Nato, could all influence Comminity diplomacy. So could the Greek-Turkish dispute. Already, Greeks are realizing that efforts by other Community states to insure against its effects may reduce the political attractions to her of membership. The papers in this volume deal with these and other issues from three vantage points : Spain's foreign policy priorities; the political aims behind Greek membership; and the implications for the enlarged Community of the Greek-Turkish tension.
