The idea for this book on Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) was sparked by the success of the ITS’08 international conference. The number of presentations and their quality bore witness to the vitality and maturity of the field, and the enthusiasm of the participants held out a promise of sustainability and innovative research. Long life to ITS research! The book is divided into five parts. The introductory chapters to these parts, which summarize foundations, developments, strengths and weaknesses in each of the areas covered, are addressed to all readers. For those who want more in-depth knowledge, we give the floor to researchers who present their work, their results, and their view of what the future holds. It is our hope that all readers will find the book informative and thought-provoking.

Ontology began life in ancient times as a fundamental part of philosophical enquiry concerned with the analysis and categorisation of what exists. In recent years, the subject has taken a practical turn with the advent of complex computerised information systems which are reliant on robust and coherent representations of their subject matter. The systematisation and elaboration of such representations and their associated reasoning techniques constitute the modern discipline of formal ontology, which is now being applied to such diverse domains as artificial intelligence, computational linguis

This book constitutes the proceedings of the Second Joint International Semantic Technology Conference, JIST 2012, held in Nara, Japan, in December 2012. The 20 full papers and 13 short papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 90 submissions. The regular papers deal with ontology and description logics; RDF and SPARQL; learning and discovery; semantic search; knowledge building; semantic Web application. The in-use track papers cover topics on social semantic Web and semantic search; and the special track papers have linked data in practice and database integration as a topic.

The International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) and the European Sem- ticWebConference(ESWC)presentthelatestresultsinresearchandapplication oftheSemanticWeb technologies. Bothhavecontributedto thepromotionof- searchontheSemanticWebintheirrespectiveregions. ResearchontheSemantic Web needs global activity which necessarily requires the spread of the Semantic Web overAsia whereit has beenunder development. The seriesofAsianSem- tic Web Conferences(ASWC) havethereforebeen establishedwith the intention of fostering researchand development of the Semantic Web and its related te- nologyinAsiabytheEastWebproject,http://odle. dit. unitn. it/eastweb/,whose objectives include fostering and promoting the cooperation between European and Asian Institutions involved in IT education and research. The ?rst ASWC was held in Beijing, during September 3-7, 2006, in this context. We initially received 253 submissions and found 221 valid submissions of abstracts after a screening process. We ?nally received 208 full papers each of which was reviewed seriously by three Program Committee members and we accepted 36 full papers and 36 short papers. The acceptance rate of full papers is 18%, which we are proud of. The acceptance rate of all the accepted papers is 36%. Di?erently from ISWC/ESWC, industrial track papers of ASWC 2006 were reviewed by the Program Committee of the research track with the same quality level but with di?erent criteria, that is, practicality was considered more importantthanoriginality. Weacceptedeightpapers, fourofthemarefullpapers andfourshortpapers,whichareincludedintheabove-mentioned72papers. The major characteristic of the topics of ASWC 2006 is that 1/4 of the total papers are ontology related.

PRICAI 2000, held in Melbourne, Australia, is the sixth Pacific Rim Interna tional Conference on Artificial Intelligence and is the successor to the five earlier PRICAIs held in Nagoya (Japan), Seoul (Korea), Beijing (China), Cairns (Aus tralia) and Singapore in the years 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998 respectively. PRICAI is the leading conference in the Pacific Rim region for the presenta tion of research in Artificial Intelligence, including its applications to problems of social and economic importance. The objectives of PRICAI are: To provide a forum for the introduction and discussion of new research results, concepts and technologies; To provide practising engineers with exposure to and an evaluation of evolving research, tools and practices; To provide the research community with exposure to the problems of practical applications of AI; and To encourage the exchange of AI technologies and experience within the Pacific Rim countries. PRICAI 2000 is a memorial event in the sense that it is the last one in the 20"" century. It reflects what researchers in this region believe to be promising for their future AI research activities. In fact, some salient features can be seen in the papers accepted. We have 12 papers on agents, while PRICAI 96 and 98 had no more than two or three. This suggests to us one of the directions in which AI research is going in the next century. It is true that agent research provides us with a wide range of research subjects from basic ones to applications.
