Abstract

"British conceptual artist Gillian Wearing won the Turner Prize in 1997 while still in her mid 30. This comprehensive, copiously illustrated exhibition catalog documents the first major retrospective of her video and photography based works. One of the young British artists, Wearing is represented in important collections ranging from the Tate Modern to the Guggenheim and the Hammer Museum. The key to unlocking the work of Gillian Wearing is found not in art history but in reality television, writes Ben Luke in the London Evening Standard. Not so much the tabloid fodder of the 21st century but the tough stuff from the Sixties and Seventies. Always at the grittier end of the Young British Artists spectrum, she is in essence a documentary film maker and photographer, her work weaving around the line that documentary treads between fact and fiction." --Publisher description.

Abstract

"A path along the floor, of proportions 1x21 units, photographed. Photographs printed actual size of objects and prints attached to the floor so that images are perfectly congruent with their objects." With these words of instruction, typed on a humble card in 1967, Victor Burgin conceived one of the most profound and remarkable works of photographic art. Each time it was exhibited, it had to be made anew, unique to its setting. Embracing Minimal and Conceptual art, performance and site-specific installation, there is no other artwork like Photopath. In his characteristically analytical and associative manner, writer and curator David Campany takes the reader through the history and implications of Photopath, and their place in the breadth of Victor Burgin's art and theoretical writings.

Abstract

This book was published after Shannon Ebner's exhibition 'A Public Character', held at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. Ebner's work is an extended mediation of language that often takes the form of photography. Certain aspects, especially seen in the ongoing series 'Black Box Collision A', represent her efforts to reflect upon our experience of language at the intersection of landscape and architecture, looking to the social world as a realistic, concrete location of poetics found and made; observed and constructed. Also included are the works 'A Hudson Yard', 'A Self', and 'A Singular', as well as the title work 'A Public Character'.

Abstract

The beloved typewriter--its utilitarian beauty, the pleasing percussive action of striking its keys, the singularity of the impressed page--is enjoying a genuine renaissance across the creative industries. In this authoritative publication, the founders of the Sackner Archive of Visual and Concrete Poetry, the largest such collection in the world, apply their experience, mining the collection they have created over four decades to present examples produced by more than 200 of the world's finest typewriter artists. From the early ornamental works produced by secretaries in the late nineteenth century to more recent works that consider the unique position of the typewritten document in the digital age, there is an astonishing and delightful range of creativity in every artwork.

Marc Camille Chaimowicz : Celebration? Realife

Abstract

"Marc Camille Chaimowicz's installation Celebration? Realife was originally created for 'Three Life Situations' at Gallery House London in 1972. The work is a strange hybrid of a scatter environment, a theatrical stage and a performance piece. Meant as a critique of modernist objectivism, Celebration? Realife is also a consciously messy and ambivalent reaction to the clean conceits of Conceptualist and post Minimalist tendencies." "Tom Holert argues that with Celebration? Realife, Chaimowicz makes a strategic and important meditation on the changing role of the artist, who in this defining work simultaneously becomes art director, stage designer, choreographer and participant. Celebration? Realife probes the relationship between art, design, popular culture and performance at a moment when these disciplines, genres and milieus hardly ever met. Holert shows how this influential work inventively anticipates and helps to define an important and increasingly popular tendency in art."--Jacket.
