Abstract

Qualitative Studies (QS) aims to become a central forum for discussions of qualitative research in psychology, education, communication, cultural studies, health sciences and social sciences in general. QS is peer-reviewed and publishes papers in English and the Scandinavian languages in any of these areas. We are interested in papers that discuss qualitative methods, their promises, problems and philosophies, and also papers that apply such methods in concrete qualitative studies. The journal is affiliated with the Center for Qualitative Studies at Aalborg University.

Abstract

Title in English: Studying together: Peer learning among part-time students in higher education, and support possibilities. The book presents peer learning among part-time students as an essential part of their higher education experience. It summarizes the research that indicates that students' achievement, well-being, and study engagement are related to peer learning. Possibilities for supporting peer learning are discussed. Qualitative research of peer learning among part-time students studying for educational degrees offers descriptions of contextual influences and peer learning situations. Based on patterns of occurrence of peer learning situations, three types of peer learning among part-time students are defined: studying beside peers, studying together with peers, and studying due to peers. Each type brings specific benefits and requires distinct support.

Abstract

Abstract

Critically reviewing many of the assumptions, claims and methods of qualitative research, the authors show how both the researcher and researched are co-producers of meanings in the research relationship.

Abstract

Lock explicitly compares Japanese and North American medical and political accounts of female middle age to challenge Western assumptions about menopause. She uses ethnography, interviews, historical and popular culture materials, and medical publications to produce a detailed account of Japanese women's lives.
