Abstract

The Tēvāram (தேவாரம்) is a collection of ca. 800 Tamil hymns to Śiva, possibly dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries and attributed to 3 authors : 1. Campantar (சம்பந்தர்), also called Ñāṉacampantar (ஞானசம்பந்தர்), 2. Appar (அப்பர்), also called Nāvukkaracar (நாவுக்கரசர்) and 3. Cuntarar (சுந்தரர்), collectively known as Mūvar (மூவர்) "The Three". It constitutes the initial part of the Tamil Śaiva Scriptures, the Paṉṉiru Tirumuṟai (பன்னிரு திருமுறை). The Tēvāram is available in book form under two different arrangements : the paṇmuṟai (பண்முறை) arrangement, where the hymns are classified according to musical mode (or பண்), and the talamuṟai (தலமுறை) arrangement, where the hymns are classified according to sites (தலம்). HOWEVER, on this CD, both பண்முறை and தலமுறை are simultaneously available, thanks to the HTML links. And it is also possible to simulate the content of smaller collections like the Akattiya Makāmuṉivar tiraṭṭiyaruḷiya Tēvārattiraṭṭu (அகத்திய மகாமுனிவர் திரட்டியருளிய தேவாரத் திரட்டு) or like the curriculum of the Dharmapuram Tēvāram School (தேவார பாடசாலை) for ōtuvār-s (ஓதுவார்).
