" What is unique about leadership and leadership roles in the Church of Norway? In what ways does the Church's organization reflect its mission? These are among the questions raised by the transition from state church to independent national church, internal reforms, and development of a new organizational structure. The objective of this anthology is to provide new insight into organization and management of a church in transition. The articles analyse various aspects of development such as democratization, professionalization, and bolstering the Church's administrative organization. Empirical investigation of the church begins in studies of organization and leadership, enabling a dialogue between what is unique in the context of the Church and general organizational theory. The book sheds light on the church's distinctive empirical ecclesiological and organization-theoretical features. The authors adopt a values-based and practice-oriented perspective, taking into account the Church's identity and values as both a religious community and an organization with a wide range of activities and leadership practices on display. Church Organization and Management is aimed primarily toward students in educational programs qualifying them for church service as well as church employees, managers, and advisory board members. This book will also provide researchers in organization and management with an introduction to the field of the church and its context. This book is the result of an initiative by the section for values-based leadership at VID Specialized University, and its authors have drawn on lengthy teaching and research experience on the Church of Norway. The book's editors are Stephen Sirris, associate professor at VID's Faculty of Theology, Diaconia and Leadership Studies, and Harald Askeland, professor at VID's Faculty of Theology, Diaconia and Leadership Studies."

"This anthology examines and elucidates how variation in ability (physical and cognitive) as a human condition impacts participation in religious communities and theology and diakonia as professional disciplines. Functional impairment and disability are meaningful human experiences that are important to explore critically and constructively, in a Norwegian context as well. Fellowship - that everyone is entitled to equal conditions and opportunities for participation in a society - is also relevant in the context of religion, theology and diakonia. Religious fellowship comprises among other things the possibility of being able to choose religious participation and to be religiously active, for example through degrees of association and social participation, employment and volunteer work. Many people have experienced exclusion from participation in religious practices and communities due to specific attitudes or physical barriers. This anthology presents new research on a variety of topics relating to religious fellowship with a focus on equality, human rights and views of humanity. The contributors are from varying fields, including social welfare, public health, social science, literary studies, diakonia, theology and religious studies."

Ministers, deacons, catechists and cantors are among the church professionals laypeople meet in the context of worship, other church services, and congregational activities. These professionals are upholding a social mission, influencing church practices, setting the tone and developing programs and services within their congregations. What are the hallmarks of the different professions within the church? What insight should church professionals have into each other's identities and areas of expertise to collaborate and participate in interdisciplinary teamwork? And how, in practical terms, should they be lead? Profession and Leadership in the Church of Norway: Organizing Work of a Church in Change provides sociological and administrative insights into general and contextual phenomena in the church professions. Relationships between professions, administration and organization in the Church of Norway are analyzed in light of empirical studies and an institutional theoretical framework. The author discusses how the professions derive appropriate ways of organizing their work. A key finding in the book is that church professions are characterized by calling, autonomy and complexity. These particular features make value-based leadership especially well-suited to the church professions. Part of the work on a new national church law includes addressing central questions about how the Church of Norway, with its extensive range of services and activities, should be led and organized. This book contributes to a broader base of knowledge about administration and the role of the church professions in this complex. Profession and Leadership in the Church of Norway will be of interest to researchers in professional studies and in organization and management, as well as practitioners: employees, church leaders and advisory council members. Thematically, the book is also relevant for students in educational programs that lead to church employment. Stephen Sirris (PhD) is a professor and leader of the Centre for Values-Based Leadership and Innovation at VID Specialized University's Faculty of Theology, Diaconia and Leadership Studies.
