Abstract

The present volume offers a systematic survey of a relatively neglected aspect of international print culture - the area of graphic art situated between “high art” and popular broadsheets. From portrait engravings and “fashion plates” of past eras through political allegories, geographical maps, to caricature, the essays collected here traverse a panorama of the graphic arts in the age of the “cult of images” (Baudelaire), exploring the conditions of production and reception, the “globalized” communicative potential of such graphic media and their preservation and evocation of political memory during the crucial period of transition between the Ancien Regime and modernity. The volume makes a major contribution to the foundation of an interdisciplinary history of the pictorial arts.
