The Reformation anniversary in 2017 showed that European and Anglo-American scholarly traditions are developing divergent historical and theological narratives of the history and significance of the Reformation which are scarcely compatible with each other. The German language tradition continues to attribute to the reformation a religious and cultural dynamic that distinguished it from the longer term processes of confessionalisation. In the Anglo-American tradition, on the other hand, the Reformation is often understood a particular amongst a series of European, or evn global, series of distinct reformationst, which no longer share a common narrative. This volume brings together papers presented at a conference organised by the Verein für Reformationsgeschichte at the Friedrich Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in 2019, which sought to bring these different scholarly traditions, together with the concepts of history, society and gender which underlie them, into conversation with each other.
