Abstract

The contributions in this volume discuss Pico della Miranola's treatise "On the salvation of Origen." The writings of Origen were an important source of inspiration for the spiritual upheavals of the Renaissance and of humanism. A fundamental Renaissance text on Origen is the "Oration on the dignity of man" of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494), which was published posthumously in 1486. In this text, freedom is thought of as the vehicle of human existence: man determines, by virtue of his freedom, his own place in the cosmos. This faculty of self-determination establishes man's responsibility for his own actions and determines his dignity. Pico also wrote about Origen in his famous "900 Theses" in 1486, saying that it would be more reasonable to assume that Origin is saved than to assume he is damned. Accused, among other things, of heresy, Pico defended both himself and Origen in the treatise "On the salvation of Origen," the first detailed apology of its kind since antiquity.
