Il titolo di questa miscellanea allude a un detto di san Francesco che esprime il suo profondo rispetto verso la parola scritta, come attesta il suo primo biografo, Tommaso da Celano (Vita beati Francisci, 82). Il Santo − che per umiltà si definiva ignorans et idiota − raccomandava ai suoi seguaci non solo di raccogliere da terra, in segno di riverenza, le carte che contenevano la parola di Dio, ma anche quella dei pagani, ossia i classici greci e romani, quia ibi litterae sunt, ex quibus componitur gloriosissimum Domini Dei nomen. Allo studio delle lettere si era dedicato infatti padre Giuseppe Avarucci (nato a Cingoli il 25 ottobre 1936), socio dell’Istituto Storico dei Cappuccini (Roma), membro dell’Associazione Italiana dei Paleografi e Diplomatisti, socio deputato della Deputazione di Storia Patria per le Marche, direttore della rivista “Studia Picena” e − per diversi decenni − professore di Paleografia e Diplomatica nella Facoltà di Lettere presso l’Università di Macerata. Di quest’“avventura universitaria” padre Avarucci parla appunto con Benedict Vadakkekara nell’intervista che viene pubblicata nella presente miscellanea. I contributi offerti al Festeggiato da venti rinomati studiosi, italiani e stranieri, rispecchiano le tre aree principali delle sue ricerche e congiungono il sacro e il “profano”. La prima parte del volume comprende infatti gli studi dedicati alla paleografia, all’archivistica e alla storia delle biblioteche, nella seconda parte troviamo alcuni testi relativi alla storia religiosa e al francescanesimo, mentre la terza parte è dedicata alle ricerche riguardanti l’Ordine dei cappuccini, specialmente al culto di san Serafino da Montegranaro.
