Il presente volume raccoglie numerosi esercizi completamente risolti e commentati. I procedimenti di calcolo sono spiegati dettagliatamente, con richiami alla teoria di base ed alle equazioni che governano i principi della termodinamica. Gli argomenti trattati seguono i programmi dei corsi di Termodinamica Applicata e fanno riferimento a situazioni reali, riscontrabili nelle usuali applicazioni civili e industriali. Si è cercato quindi di evitare esercizi di argomentazione astratta, evidenziando come la termodinamica è applicata continuamente nelle attività di ogni giorno, ad esempio nei motori endotermici delle autovetture, nei frigoriferi, negli impianti di conversione dell’energia e di climatizzazione (riscaldamento e condizionamento dell’aria). L’approccio semplice ed intuitivo ed il modestissimo ricorso a tecniche matematiche rendono il libro fruibile con facilità da parte di tutti gli studenti universitari impegnati nello studio dei corsi di Termodinamica.

Non potendo conseguire l’immortalità, gli umani cercano ostinatamente di prolungare la vita e di potenziare le proprie capacità fisiche e mentali, ricorrendo sempre più alla scienza e alla tecnologia. Il libro illustra questi tentativi, che preludono all’avvento di un nuovo stadio dell’umanità, di un “post-umano” che, grazie alle pratiche della bioingegneria e alle tecnologie della mente, potrebbe presentarsi in forme inedite: individui migliorati nell’aspetto fisico, nella salute e nella longevità, oppure simbionti di uomo e di macchina, robot e cyborg, oppure componenti di una smisurata “creatura planetaria” dotata di capacità mentali senza precedenti, sede di una vasta intelligenza connettiva e deposito sterminato di conoscenze. Si tratta di un potente atto di delega tecnologica dalle conseguenze non tutte positive e in parte imprevedibili. I possibili scenari del post-umano sono analizzati sotto il profilo teorico, sociale ed etico, e se ne mettono in luce i possibili rischi. Parlare ai bambini è un’esperienza a meravigliosa: sono interlocutori, attenti, rigorosi, e spesso più severi nei giudizi di noi adulti: sanno leggere tra le righe, sanno interpretare , sanno "volare" con la fantasia, conoscono la spontaneità e la gioia delle scoperte che noi adulti abbiamo dimenticato, sanno essere leali e fedeli, sanno partecipare , soffrire, gioire con i personaggi a loro più cari. Attraverso le favole possiamo trasmettergli messaggi importanti che riguardano la loro vita e nello stesso tempo possiamo imparare anche noi, senza sentirci aggrediti o giudicati ma con con la curiosità e la disponibilità proprie di quel periodo magico che e’ l’infanzia. Il libro affronta vari temi non soltanto pediatrici, ma inerenti all’educazione del bambino in senso lato: cercando di dare una risposta alle molteplici domande che i genitori quotidianamente mi rivolgono. La maggior parte sono sotto forma di favole , rivolte al bambino o di spiegazioni molto semplici rivolte al bambino più grande ; entrambe sono precedute da una spiegazione rivolta agli adulti che interagiscono con il bambino. Il contributo di ognuno di noi nell’evoluzione della personalità di un individuo può essere molto importante perché ogni bambino non è un bambino qualunque e non deve diventare un adulto qualunque.

Il libro nasce dall’esigenza di coniugare esperienze e capacità procedurali diverse provenienti da vari ambiti disciplinari, quali l’informatica e la statistica, al fine di ricercare ed individuare percorsi e relazioni legate alla conoscenza. In un contesto di business, la conoscenza scoperta può avere un valore strategico per le aziende perché consente di aumentare i profitti, riducendo i costi oppure aumentando le entrate con il conseguente aumento del ROI. Il volume è rivolto sia a studenti universitari/ricercatori, che a professionisti e manager aziendali che vogliano approfondire gli aspetti algoritmici delle tecniche di Data mining. A giustificazione si può sottolineare che lo studio degli algoritmi e delle principali tecniche è essenziale per conoscere meglio come la tecnologia possa essere applicata ai diversi tipi di dati e quindi anche a diverse problematiche di business. Il testo pone volutamente l’attenzione sugli aspetti procedurali e di calcolo della metodologia, differenziandosi dagli altri testi in italiano che inquadrano puramente il contesto statistico.
