Abstract

One of the nine canonical Greek lyric poets, Pindar has enjoyed a brilliant reputation since antiquity. Notoriously challenging but widely respected, Pindar's poetry has been increasingly studied in modern times. In the late nineteenth century, C. A. M. Fennell (1843-1916), a classicist and Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge, turned his attention to Pindar's Nemean and Isthmian odes. First published in 1883 but released in a new edition in 1899, this book features an introduction focusing on the practical aspects of the pentathlon, which sets a good grounding for the comprehension of the odes themselves. Touching on metrical structure, this edition then presents each ode in its original Greek, accompanied by an individual, detailed introduction and full commentary. This fascinating work will be of value to advanced students of Greek grappling with the intricacies of Pindar's complex poetry.

Abstract

This work provides new editions with introduction and commentary of five odes from Pindar's Nemeans. Three celebrate victories won by Aeginetans at the Nemean games (Nemeans 4, 6, and 8). The remaining two are drawn from the appendix to the book: Nemean 10, for the Argive wrestler Theaeus and his family, including the famous myth of the Dioscuri, and Nemean 11, for the installation of a prytanis on the island of Tenedos. The commentaries elucidate problems of metre, text, and interpretation, and provide up-to-date treatment of the language and subject-matter of the poems.

Abstract

Basil L. Gildersleeve (1831-1924) was an American classicist who spent much of his career at Johns Hopkins University. This is his influential 1895 edition of Pindar's Olympian and Pythian Odes, a body of work notable for its insights into lyric poetry and modes of self-understanding. Gildersleeve's remarkable introductory essay outlines Pindar's lineage, patriotism, and poetic development, as well as his poetic themes and structures. It focuses particularly on Pindar's new approach to old themes, his view of government and the human condition, and his role as a conveyer of Greek ethics.
