Abstract

William L. Newman published Volume 2 of Politics of Aristotle in 1887. It contains his reconstructed Greek text of books 1-2 of the Politics, critical notes, commentary, an introduction to the source manuscripts, & a discussion of the Latin translation of William of Moerbeke. Newman's reconstructed text is based on the edition of Susemihl & his own fresh collations of a number of manuscripts. His cautious text, always supported by extensive manuscript evidence, was widely regarded as an improvement on Bekker's more conjectural 1837 version. Newman's commentary was highly praised & has been used for over a century by students of the Politics. As a scholar & a pedagogue, Newman had a significant impact on 19th century classical studies. His edition of the Politics stands as a monument of Victorian scholarship & will continue to be read & studied by scholars & students of Aristotle.

Abstract

William L. Newman published Volume 3 of Politics of Aristotle in 1902. It contains his reconstructed text of books 3-5 with critical notes, commentary, & an introduction to the manuscript sources. Newman's reconstructed text is based on the edition of Susemihl & his own fresh collations of a number of manuscripts, including MS. Phillipps 891 (z), which contains William of Moerbeke's Latin translation. Newman's text, always supported by extensive manuscript evidence, was widely regarded as an improvement on Bekker's more conjectural 1837 version. Newman's detailed commentary was highly praised & has been used for over a century by students of the Politics. As a scholar & pedagogue Newman had a significant impact on 19th century classical studies. His four-volume edition of the Politics stands as a monument of Victorian scholarship & will continue to be read & studied by scholars & students of Aristotle.

Abstract

James Adam (1860-1907) was a Scottish classics scholar who taught at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. A strong defender of the importance of Greek philosophy in a well-rounded education, Adam published a number of Plato's works including Protagoras and Crito. This two-volume critical edition of the Republic (1902) was another major contribution to the field. Though his preface claims 'an editor cannot pretend to have exhausted its significance by means of a commentary,' Adam's depth of knowledge and erudite analysis of the Greek text ensured that his edition remained the standard reference for decades to follow, and it remains a thought-provoking evaluation of one of the great works of Western thought. Volume 2 examines Books 6-10, which discuss the place of the philosopher and questions of governance.

Abstract

Nearly all the works Aristotle (384-322 BCE) prepared for publication are lost; the priceless ones extant are lecture-materials, notes, and memoranda (some are spurious). They can be categorized as practical; logical; physical; metaphysical; on art; other; fragments.
