Wörter gelten als Zeichen für Dinge und Sachverhalte in unserer Welt. Verändern sich diese, so verändern sich auch ihre Stellvertreter – die Wörter. Sie werden zu „Zeichen der Veränderung“. Wie diese Veränderungen erfasst werden können, wird in diesem Band an mehreren Beispielen aufgezeigt: Aus dem Bereich der Wort- und Begriffsgeschichte werden die Lexeme Geschmack und fjale (alban. ,Wort‘), der Begriff Mitteleuropa und eine Wortgeschichte des Samstags betrachtet. Bei der Kodifikation historischer Wortschätze stehen die Fremdwortlexikographie und -glossare des 17. Jahrhunderts sowie die Erforschung des Valenzwandels und grammatikographische Betrachtungen zu Verbpartikeln im Mittelpunkt. Entwicklungen im Bereich der Terminologie oder Tendenzen zur Überlänge in der juristischen Sprache finden sich in einem Abschnitt zu Fachwortschätzen und zu politischer Sprache ebenso wie die Analyse von Rassenkonzepten in der völkischen Bewegung oder jüdische Reaktionen auf die antisemitische Propaganda in Deutschland. Formulierungstraditionen und pragmatische Phänomene beschließen diesen Band, so der Gebrauch von Vor- und Nachnamen, Worte und Formeln (west-)europäischer Epistolographie, Dialektales und die gegenwartssprachliche Perspektive auf Authentizität.
