Dieser Band bringt eine Sammlung neuer Essays, die untersuchen, welche Rolle Horoskope und deren allgemeine Verwendung in der westlichen Kulturgeschichte von der Antike bis zum 19. Jahrhundert gespielt haben. This volume examines the specific role of horoscopic astrology in Western culture from antiquity to the nineteenth century. Focusing on the public appearance of astrological rhetoric, the essays break new ground for a better understanding of the function of horoscopes in public discourse. The volume's three parts address the use of imperial horoscopes in late antiquity, the transformation of doctrines and rhetorics in Islamic medieval contexts, and the important status of astrology in early modern Europe. The combination of in-depth historical studies and methodological considerations results in an important contribution to religious and cultural studies.

Restaurierungspraktiken in der italienischen Renaissancekunst Kritische Hinterfragung des Renaissancebegriffs Umkodierung antiker Werke zu politischen Zwecken The aim of this publication is to clarify the relationships between material restoration and politics in Italian Renaissance art. The focus of this research is on the question of origin as a foothold for political, patrimonial, and cultural identity. These claims were enacted within a system which, rather than restoring the initial forms and meanings of existing objects, remodeled the past according to new identity requirements: spaces were reorganized, and works of art invested with new meanings. Their material and aesthetic reality was thus transformed and redefined. The aim is therefore to analyze the potential physical modifications of these artefacts in light of their symbolic recoding. The book is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor Hanna SzymaÅska, written by eminent scholars, representing the fields of Egyptology, Classical Archaeology, Early Christian Studies and Conservation of Artefacts. Most of the studies are related to discoveries made by Hanna SzymaÅska in Egypt, at Tell Atrib and Marea. Some of the sensational discoveries unearthed recently at the Byzantine basilica at Mareao are presented here for the first time by K. Babraj, T. Derda, E. JastrzÄbowska, and B. Lichocka. A group of articles is reminiscent of H. SzymaÅska s studies on Egyptian terracottas from ancient Athribis. K. MyÅliwiec presents the actual stage of research. S. JÄdraszek discusses social implications of some types of Hellenistic figurines, P. Ballet analyses Early Christian terracottas from other sites, while N. Willburger proposes a new interpretation of the iconographic topos depicting an old drunken woman. Other contributions concern the sites of Deir el-Bahari (E. Laskowska-Kusztal), Dendera (A. Åukaszewicz) and Shenhur (T. Górecki, A. PoÅudnikiewicz). There is also a study on ancient stomatological instruments (A. Krug), an analysis of the relationships between Christian and Islamic religious texts (K. KoÅcielniak) and a description of Józef SÄkowski s journey to Egypt and Nubia in 19th century (J. Åliwa). G. Korpal analyses the conservation work on a modern sculpture, and T. Å"urkowska describes the ambience of the excavations mission directed by H. SzymaÅska in a humourus way. A scientific biography of Hanna SzymaÅska, written by M. Dzielska, is found at the beginning of the book.

New insights on the reception of Etruscan antiquity in the modernist period."L'Étrurie est à la mode", French archaeologist Salomon Reinach bluntly stated in 1927. Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, Etruria had not only been attracting the attention of archaeologists and specialists of all sorts, but it had also been a fascinating and, in some cases, captivating destination for poets, novelists, painters and sculptors from all over Europe. This volume deals with the impact of the constantly expanding knowledge on the Etruscans and their mysterious civilisation on Italian, French, English, and German literature, arts and culture, with particular regard to the modernist period (1890-1950). The volume brings a distinctive point of view to the subject by approaching it from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective, and by looking at a quite diverse range of topics and artefacts, which includes, but is not limited to, the study of drawings, art works, travel essays, novels, cooking recipes, schoolbooks, photographs, and movies.By exploring a new paradigm to understand ancient cultures, beyond the traditional ideas and models of "reception of the classics", and by challenging the alleged fracture between the so-called "two cultures" of humanities and natural sciences, Modern Etruscans will be of interest to scholars from various disciplines. Designed as a learning tool for university courses on the interplay between literature and science in the twentieth century, it is suited as recommended reading for students in the humanities.Contributors: Francesca Orestano (Università degli Studi di Milano), Chiara Zampieri (KU Leuven), Bart Van den Bossche (KU Leuven), Lisa C. Pieraccini (University of California, Berkeley), Martin Miller (Italienisches Kulturinstitut Stuttgart), Marie-Laurence Haack (Université de Picardie Jules Verne), Gennaro Ambrosino (University of Warwick), Martina Piperno (Durham University), Andrea Avalli (Scuola Superiore di Studi Storici di San Marino).Ebook available in Open Access.

Examining a range of antiquarian practices - history-writing, archaeological investigations, works of art, architecture and literature - that emerged in early modern Europe, this text challenges the idea of a single 'Renaissance'. It assembles essays on local antiquities in Spain, Portugal, France, Britain, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland.

Ancient Greek history holds a special place in the works of many 19th-c. writers. The same goes for Cyprian Norwid, one of the most eminent poets in the history of Polish literature, a thinker, and an artist. This book scrutinizes Norwid’s fascination with Greek history and culture, especially his peculiar synthesis of Greek thought and Christianity. It focuses on the key themes of the relationship of Platonism with early Christian writings and their presence in Norwid’s contemporary culture, the opposition of memory and history in 19th-c. literature and social life, and the image of the artist and its influence on social life in modern everyday. The book analyzes Norwid’s oeuvre in a broad comparison with representatives of French, German, and British literature and the humanities.
