Geist und Buchstabe steht für die konflikt- und krisenträchtige Dynamik, mit der das jeweilige christlich-religiöse Bewusstsein einer Zeit die eigene Tradition interpretiert und transformiert. Herausragender Ort dieser Prozesse ist die theologische Wissenschaft. Sie ist im konkreten Vollzug vielfältige Arbeit am Buchstaben, mit dem Ziel, darin dem Geist der eigenen religiösen Tradition unter den jeweiligen weltbildlichen und wissenschaftstheoretischen Voraussetzungen ihrer Zeit zu dienen. Davon zeugen in unterschiedlicher - philologischer, hermeneutischer, philosophischer, theologiegeschichtlicher und praktisch-theologischer - Hinsicht die 26 Beiträge dieses Bandes. Einen gewissen inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt bildet dabei die vielfältige Bedeutung, die in diesem Zusammenhang dem Werk und Wirken Friedrich Schleiermachers zukommt.

In October 2018, Samford University hosted Teaching Dante, a conference designed to help non-specialists teach the work of the Florentine poet more effectively in undergraduate core and general education courses.
