Abstract

The focus of the monograph is on hierarchical systems of lexical items, particularly in scientific terminologies. It includes research outcomes from the dissertation Lexical Hierarchies in the Scientific Terminology, supplemented with a broad introduction to the typology of lexical and semantic relations and to a variety of branching and non-branching hierarchies, proportional series and other types of lexical configurations. It analyses the principles of formation of terminological classificatory hierarchies and identifies sense relations between items at superordinate and subordinate levels, and those at the same level. Specific morphological and onomatological properties of different languages influence consistency of corresponding lexical hierarchies, altghough the conceptual systems are identical.

Abstract

Hierarchical Composite Materials provides an in-depth analysis of a class of advanced composites that have properties that are anisotropic due to structural organization at different length scales. Chapters address how ordering occurs from the atomic-scale up to the microstructure and how control of these factors leads to the final materials' properties. Manufacturing procedures, properties, and applications of different functionally graded materials are discussed in detail. This book is ideal for materials scientists, mechanical engineers, chemists and physicists.

Abstract

Globalization promised to bring about a golden age of liberal individualism, breaking down hierarchies of kinship, caste, and gender around the world and freeing people to express their true, authentic agency. But in some places globalization has spurred the emergence of new forms of hierarchy—or the reemergence of old forms—as people try to reconstitute an imagined past of stable moral order. This is evident from the Islamic revival in the Middle East to visions of the 1950s family among conservatives in the United States. Why does this happen and how do we make sense of this phenomenon? Why do some communities see hierarchy as desireable? In this book, leading anthropologists draw on insightful ethnographic case studies from around the world to address these trends. Together, they develop a theory of hierarchy that treats it both as a relational form and a framework for organizing ideas about the social good.

Abstract

Systems studied in environmental science, due to their structure and the heterogeneity of the entities composing them, often exhibit complex dynamics that can only be captured by hybrid modeling approaches. While several concurrent definitions of “hybrid modeling” can be found in the literature, it is defined here broadly as the approach consisting in coupling existing modelling paradigms to achieve a more accurate or efficient representation of systems. The need for hybrid models generally arises from the necessity to overcome the limitation of a single modeling technique in terms of structural flexibility, capabilities, or computational efficiency. This book brings together experts in the field of hybrid modelling to demonstrate how this approach can address the challenge of representing the complexity of natural systems. Chapters cover applied examples as well as modeling methodology.Systems studied in environmental science, due to their structure and the heterogeneity of the entities composing them, often exhibit complex dynamics that can only be captured by hybrid modeling approaches. Abstract

This is an original key for the naming of flowers, trees, grasses, sedges, rushes and ferns in the British Isles. No expert botanical knowledge is expected of the user and with a little practice the key can quickly be mastered. The key is not a descriptive flora but is a handy means to rapid identification which should be useful to students of all ages and to all who like to know the names of flowers, but are discouraged by more sophisticated wordy floras. This flora breaks new ground in wild flower identification in adopting a novel approach. It has its origins in courses run by the author where a simple field key was required that could give rapid results and was based upon easily seen characters. Subsequent extensive testing through the AIDGAP (Aids to Identification in Difficult Groups of Animals and Plants) organisation has further refined the key as a working tool for field and bench use.

Abstract

This book provides a self-contained introduction of mixed-effects models and small area estimation techniques. In particular, it focuses on both introducing classical theory and reviewing the latest methods. First, basic issues of mixed-effects models, such as parameter estimation, random effects prediction, variable selection, and asymptotic theory, are introduced. Standard mixed-effects models used in small area estimation, known as the Fay-Herriot model and the nested error regression model, are then introduced. Both frequentist and Bayesian approaches are given to compute predictors of small area parameters of interest. For measuring uncertainty of the predictors, several methods to calculate mean squared errors and confidence intervals are discussed. Various advanced approaches using mixed-effects models are introduced, from frequentist to Bayesian approaches. This book is helpful for researchers and graduate students in fields requiring data analysis skills as well as in mathematical statistics.
