In recent years, facades have become more important in architectural practice and in public perception. As well as functioning as a protective shell and visible 'face' and supplying heat and electricity, a building's exterior interacts directly with the surrounding public space. This revised and expanded new edition of the Facade Construction Manual offers readers technical and design planning fundamentals in a compact reference work.A section describing a comprehensive selection of built structures shows general and unique, tried and tested, and innovative approaches to facade planning - down to the last detail.

Introduction to building façades as revised edition Façades determine the appearance of a building. Hence, they constitute a major element in architecture. At the same time, the building's envelope has important functions to fulfil, such as lighting, weatherproofing, thermal insulation, load transfer and sound insulation. Over the past 15 years, façades have become increasingly complex - 'intelligent' facades, for instance, adapt to changing climate and lighting conditions. Newly developed materials and technologies have broadened the scope of façade functions. This book demonstrates the principles of façade construction. It systematically describes the most common types, such as post-and-beam façade, curtain wall, corridor façade or double façade, and provides guidelines for appropriate detailing. Numerous drawings made especially for the book explain the principles of different types of facades, which are then illustrated with built examples. For this second edition, all chapters were revised and all four examples in the case studies chapter were replaced by new material. The new chapter "Future Façades" offers insights into what's next.

Facades - they are the first feature of a building to be noticed, they determine its distinctive appearance and are often the subject of controversial debate. This new first edition of the Facade Construction Manual provides a systematic survey of contemporary expertise in the application of new materials and energy- efficient technologies in facade design, and represents an invaluable addition to our series of Construction Manuals. It surveys the facade design requirements made by various types of buildings, as well as the most important materials, from natural stone through to synthetics, and documents a diversity of construction forms for a wide range of building types. Over 100 international case-studies in large-scale, detailed drawings are presented in the comprehensive project section. «Facade Construction Manual» provides a systematic survey of contemporary expertise in the application of new materials and energy-efficient technologies in facade design. It surveys the facade design requirements made by various types of buildings, as well as the most important materials, from natural stone through to synthetics, and documents a diversity of construction forms for a wide range of building types.

The facade serves as the building's public face, allowing rapid assessment of its architecture. Best of DETAIL: Facades explores this topic with theoretical discussions and an in-depth look at a range of selected projects, which, besides showcasing suitable materials and designs, give the reader a detailed look behind the scenes. It turns out that quality architecture can only result from a coherency between the facade, structure, internal organisation and building services - design elements that interact directly with each other. This presents the architect with enormous challenges, particularly as the unity between the exterior and interior is no longer a given, as today's range of materials and design possibilities offer nearly limitless creativity. The book gathers highlights on this issue from various DETAIL publications, offering abundant inspiration and constructive solutions for the reader's own work.

"Visually enriched with over 250 photographs and drawings, Bioclimatic Double-Skin Façades is an essential reference guide for understanding the types and functions of double-skin facades. Author Mary Ben Bonham examines the history and continuing potential of double-skin architecture, informing on the variety of approaches possible and advising a rigorous integrated design process leading to application. Featuring a wide selection of architectural examples, the book will be of interest to professionals and students within the fields of architecture, engineering, and construction. Characterized by a buffer-like air space between two glazed building skins, double-skin windows and facades aim to improve building comfort and energy performance. Double skins introduce complexity and initial costs, yet significant buildings in locations around the globe continue to select this approach. In addition to exploring motivations, benefits, and cautions for designing with double skins, the book provides a primer on fundamental facade design concepts and strategies for control of thermal, luminous, and acoustic environments. Chapters also address alternative types of high-performance facades and implications for each phase of facade design and construction. Bioclimatic Double-Skin Facades promotes bioclimatic design that is inspired by nature, measured in performance, and uniquely adapted to climate and place. In-depth case studies illustrate how double-skin facades have been adapted to a range of climates and cultural settings: Marseille Library and Grenoble Courthouse in France, Cambridge Public Library in Massachusetts, Manitoba Hydro Place in Canada, and the Pearl River Tower in China"--

New York City, where this mode of construction originated, houses more cast-iron buildings than any other place in the world, and this book collects together some of its best examples. Well-known photographer Edmund V. Gillon, Jr., has wandered the streets of lower Manhattan and photographed them from numerous aspects and angles, in detail and from an distance. Margot Gayle, charman of the Friends of Cast-Iron Architecture, has carefully researched every plate, identifying architect, foundry, date built, location, and delineating the history of the building. Together these plates and commentaries provide one of the most comprehensive statements on cast iron ever compiled.
