"Canadian Sikh have been great changes in their communities, which are primarily concentrated in larger urban centres, especially Vancouver and the British Columbia Lower Mainland. In The Sikh Diaspora in Vancouver, Kamala Elizabeth Nayar illustrates the transition of Sikh social culture as it moves from small Punjabi villages to a Canadian metropolis." "The result of an analysis of the beliefs and attitudes among three generations of the Sikh community, the book highlights differences and tensions with regard to familial relations, child rearing, and religion. In exploring these tensions, Nayar focuses particularly on the younger generation, and underlines the role of Sikh youth as a catalyst for change within the community. She also examines the Sikh community as it functions and interacts with mainstream Canadian society in the light of modernity and multiculturalism, exploring the change, or lack thereof, in attitudes about the functioning of the community, the role of multicultural organizations and the media, continuity in traditional customs, modifications in behaviour patterns, and changes in values."--Jacket.

While Indigenous media have gained increasing prominence around the world, the vibrant Aboriginal media world on the Canadian West Coast has received little scholarly attention. As the first ethnography of the Aboriginal media community in Vancouver, Sovereign Screens reveals the various social forces shaping Aboriginal media production including community media organizations and avant-garde art centers, as well as the national spaces of cultural policy and media institutions. Kristin L. Dowell uses the concept of visual sovereignty to examine the practices, forms, and mea

"After the Second World War, Vancouver emerged as a hotbed of striptease talent. In Burlesque West, the first critical history of the city's notorious striptease scene, Becki Ross delves into the erotic entertainment industry at the northern end of the dancers' west coast tour - the North-South route from Los Angeles to Vancouver - which provided rotating work for dancers and variety for club clientele. Lavishly illustrated and thoroughly documented, Burlesque West is an ambitious and engaging social history that looks at the convergence of the personal and the political in a phenomenon that combines sex, art and entertainment, and commerce."--Jacket

"Eight-year-old Akihisa Takayama escapes from Japanese-ruled Manchuria, after the Russian invasion of 1945, to Chinese Taiwan. But life in Taiwan is as repressive under the brutal dictatorship of the Kuomintang as it was in Japanese Manchuria. In the 1960s, now a physician, and named Charles Yang, he ultimately escapes the White Terror of Taiwan for the United States, and from there goes on to Canada to become one of the first Taiwanese Canadians in Vancouver. His experiences illuminate the repression in Taiwan, and the ongoing dispute between Communist China and Taiwan over the meaning of "One China." This is a rare personal account of the little known histories of Manchukuo and Taiwanese immigration to North America."--

Creese reveals that the routine discounting of previous education by potential employers, the demeaning of African accents and bodies by society at large, cultural pressures to reshape gender relations and parenting practices, and the absence of extended families often contribute to downward mobility for immigrants. The New African Diaspora in Vancouver maps out how African immigrants negotiate these multiple dimensions of local exclusion while at the same time creating new spaces of belonging and emerging collective identity."--Pub. desc. "The New African Diaspora in Vancouver documents the experiences of immigrants from countries in sub-Saharan Africa on Canada's west coast. Despite their individual national origins, many adopt new identities as 'African' and are actively engaged in creating a new, place-based 'African community.' In this study, Gillian Creese analyzes interviews with sixty-one women and men from twenty-one African countries to document the gendered and racialized processes of community-building that occur in the contexts of marginalization and exclusion as they exist in Vancouver.
