Videogames have become an integral part of our lives and the City-Building genre tries to establish itself as a “realistic” city simulation. This paper questions the ability of City-Building games to simulate complex Urban challenges, trying to find potential as well as limits of the ability of these games to mimic real-world city problems such as racial problems, infrastructure management, public spaces, safety, crime, lighting, traffic, or any other type of challenge. It also aims to understand what are the features that makes games and video games attractive to players; what makes a game, a game, while building an understanding of what differentiates videogame simulations and traditional software used generally by Urban planners and Architects alike. Through research in literature, case studies, and an experimental simulation that we will run ourselves, we aim to understand the potential of these games to simulate complex urban systems, as well as where they stand compared to software in the process as well as the results.

Urbanisation in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, poses challenges to urban living conditions. Despite large scale housing programmes from the side of the government, construction and settling processes have largely remained incremental. Nadine Appelhans focuses on the relation between statutory planning and practices of everyday urbanisation. The findings from Bahir Dar suggest that some mundane regimes of building the city are patronised, while others are considered undesired by policy makers. Based on this insight, the author argues that urban development in Bahir Dar needs to be locally grounded, differentiated and inclusive to avoid further tendencies of segregation.
