This selection of passages from Elizabethan pros etranslations is meant to show two things: first, the extraordinary life and vigour which the translators imparted to their renderings; second, the kind of intellectual interest which the activity of translations reveals. These translations are seen to be contributions both to the development of English prose and to the development of a new outlook. The passages are taken from Hoby's version of Castiglione, Newton's of Lemnius, Adlington's Apuleius, Underdowne's Heliodorus, North's Plutarch, Pettie's Guazzo, Rowland's Mendoza, Ashley's Le Roy, Jone's Nenna, Holland's Pliny, and Florio's Montaigne. There is an introduction, introductory notes on each passage, and notes.
