Fred Sandback (1943–2003), a prominent Minimalist artist, and the Pritzker Prize winning architect Luis Barragán (1902–1988) shared an interest in the properties of light and color, which they considered central to their practices. In 2016 sculptures by the artist were temporarily installed in the architect’s Casa Luis Barragán, Casa Antonio Gálvez, Cuadra San Cristóbal, and Casa Gilardi. The resulting interplay was documented in remarkable photographs and is presented for the first time in this publication with essays by Barragan Foundation Director Federica Zanco and curator Daniel Garza Usabiaga, as well as a conversation between architect Roger Duffy, artist Amavong Panya, curator Lilian Tone, and art historian Edward Vazquez.

Stretching lengths of yarn across interior spaces, American artist Fred Sandback (1943-2003) created expansive works that underscore the physical presence of the viewer. This book, the first major study of Sandback, explores the full range of his art, which not only disrupts traditional conceptions of material presence, but also stages an ethics of interaction between object and observer. Drawing on Sandback's substantial archive, Edward A. Vazquez demonstrates that the artist's work with all its physical slightness and attentiveness to place, as well as its relationship to minimal and conceptual art of the 1960s creates a link between viewers and space that is best understood as sculptural even as it almost surpasses physical form. At the same time, the economy of Sandback's site-determined practice draws viewers' focus to their connection to space and others sharing it. As Vazquez shows, Sandback's art aims for nothing less than a total recalibration of the senses, as the spectator is caught on neither one side nor the other of an object or space, but powerfully within it.

Sculpture as a specific medium is rarely investigated within a deeply cultural, philosophical context, nor within visual art itself. Whilst discussions about installation art, performance art, or other 3D art forms are widespread, the discourse on sculpture seems to be stuck in historical, material, or thematic frameworks. This is a loss for our understanding of art in general, and of sculpture in particular. In order to assess contemporary art practices, one should have a better understanding of the logics that are at work within sculpture as a medium, and how they differ from other art forms. Drawing from literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis and semiotics, Ernst van Alphen explores 'seven logics' of sculpture: the logic of inner necessity; the logic of narration; the logic of sculpting space; the logic of the solid; the logic of assemblage; the logic of architectural space; and the logic of the specific object. These relate to aspects such as the senses, the skin, the body, objecthood, narrative dynamics, the shaping of space, fragmentation, and montage. 'Seven logics of sculpture' opens up new ways of looking at, understanding, and appreciating sculpture, placing the medium at the heart of art's experience; how sculpture can be shaped, assembled, encountered, seen and embodied.

On Line: Drawing through the Twentieth Century explores a radical transformation of drawing that began over a century ago and continues as a vital impulse in art today. In a revolutionary departure from traditional ideas of drawing, and from the reliance on paper as the medium's fundamental support, artists have pushed the line of drawing into real space, expanding its relationship to gesture and form and invigorating its links with painting and sculpture, photography and film, and, particularly notably, dance and performance. Through works by over 100 artists, and through essays by Cornelia Butler and Catherine de Zegher that illuminate both broad themes and individual practices, On Line presents a groundbreaking history of an art form. The great, recognized art movements, from Cubism and Futurism at the beginning of the twentieth century through Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Concretism, arte povera, Conceptualism, and many other approaches up to the diverse present, are shown from a new perspective, and are joined by a host of less familiar artworks that properly claim a place in this differently defined field.
