De centrale vraag van dit werk van Elisabeth Cowie is hoe de vrouw in de film wordt afgebeeld en welke gevolgen deze afbeelding heeft voor de psyche van de toeschouwers. Daaraan gekoppeld bespreekt Cowie enkele feministische argumenten die andere vrouwbeelden en gewijzigde verhoudingen tussen mannelijkheid en vrouwelijkheid in de film bepleiten. Hierop voortbouwend legt Cowie de link tussen film en psychoanalyse omdat in deze relatie tussen de toeschouwer en de fimpersonages processen werkzaam zijn die eerder reeds door psychologen als Freud en Lacan als essentieel voor het innerlijk werden beschouwd. Zo passeren onder meer identificatie, ontkenning, fantasie, voyeurisme en fetisjisme de revue. Films die Cowie gebruikt als prakijkvoorbeelden om haar bevindingen te staven zijn onder meer 'Morocco'. 'Coma', 'Smooth Talk' en 'Blue Steel'.
