Abstract

This collection explores the way in which critical theory and practice can unite into a common vision of democratic hope. While each author has his or her own specialty, the thread of shared dreams is portrayed in a call for solidarity. The separate viewpoints are drawn together to constitute a democratic platform for an enlightened critical education agenda. From narrative to critical ethnography, case studies explore the multicultural and power struggles of states, districts, and schools. Intimately connected to all contributions in this collection is the commitment of each author to similar

Abstract

"School segregation is percieved as an unyielding problem worldwide, which is manifest along both ethnic and socio-economic lines. With this edited volume we aim to share information about school segregation and policies focused on countering school segregation from an international perspective. Many countries develop policies to prevent and counter school segregation in order to provide equal opportunities for all children and to contribute to citizenship in multicultural societies. The aim of the book is to present the state of the art regarding research on socio-ethnic school segregation across the US and a number of European countries, and to share 'good practices'. This book is the initiative of the Dutch National Knowledge Centre for Mixed Schools which aims at promoting the dissemination of knowledge and good practices regarding desegregation and integration in education. Together with researchers from Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands, the Centre invited international experts to present research information about the effects of national programmes or policies and local initiatives that have been implemented in various countries. The authors analyze interventions in their national contexts and identify factors facilitating success. The book offers an overview of almost 20 countries and regions and an excellent state of the art in this emerging field of research."--Publisher's description.
