"Hailed as “a cri de coeur woven into a utopian vision” by Susan Brownmiller (author of Against Our Will), Ties That Bind is the highly praised work of prizewinning writer and professor Sarah Schulman on “familial homophobia,” a phenomenon that, until now, has not had a name but is nevertheless an integral part of most people’s experience. Ties That Bind invites us to understand familial homophobia as a cultural crisis, rather than a personal or an individual problem. Ambitious, original, and deeply important, Schulman’s book draws on her own lived experience, her research, and her engagement with active social change to articulate a practical, attainable vision of transformation that can begin today. This highly acclaimed and groundbreaking exploration is now available in paperback for countless more to experience a fundamental text that alters our understanding of homophobia and adds a critical dimension to the political landscape of all Americans." --

The dissertation has an important societal relevance when it comes to an understanding of the many obstacles LGBTQ social movements face in promoting social changes. The findings regarding the Brazilian experience of criminalising homo and transphobia can provide important insights to LGBTQ activists in other countries in the Global North and South on what strategies could be more effective in forging the human rights of LGBTQ people, especially in contexts where political opponents are well organised and mobilised. This dissetation discloses under what circumstances (and how) the LGBTQ movement influences the social, political and judiciary spheres in Brazil managed to shape public policies for LGBTQ issues. The dissertation provides one of the first systematic analyses of criminalising homo and transphobia in Brazil. Its orginality lies in analysing the political and social variables that explain the long polic ymaking process of criminalisation of homo and transphobia, going beyond juridical and jurisprudential analysis that focuses only on legal arguments, ignoring broader political and social aspects of this particular public policy. Although sexual minorities in Africa continue to face harsh penalties for same-sex relationships, strong anti-homophobic resistance exists across the continent. This book systematically charts the emergence and effects of politicized homophobia in Malawi and shows how it has been used as a strategy by political elites to consolidate their moral and political authority, through punishing LGBT people and dividing social movements. Here, Ashley Currier pays particular attention to the impact of politicized homophobia on different social movements, specifically HIV/AIDS, human rights, LGBT rights, and women's rights movements. Her timely account intervenes in Afro-pessimist portrayals of the African continent as a hotbed of homophobia and unravels the tensions and contradictions underlying Western perceptions of Malawi. It shows that, in reality, many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people happily call Malawi home, in spite of heightened antigay vitriol that has generated unwanted visibility for them.

Schools should offer a safe and secure environment for all young people to develop, to learn, and to thrive. Sadly, for many, they fall short. Homophobic and transphobic behaviour is still painfully common in schools across Europe. A significant number of LGBT pupils experience homophobic and transphobic bullying, and they are more likely to experience violence than heterosexual peers. This publication explores the underlying attitudes towards homosexuality in eight European countries: Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Turkey. It is the product of a strategic partnership (KA2) between fifteen European secondary and higher education institutions, launched in 2016 under the auspices of the European Commission's ERASMUS+ programme. The project supported by this partnership, Homo'poly, promotes greater understanding and acceptance of homosexuality with the explicit aim of improving the school life of LGB pupils. Somewhere over the rainbow: Discussions on homosexuality in education across Europe stellt einen informativen Überblicksband dar.
