This study explores the grammar of focus particles in German. It gives a thorough description and analysis of focus particle constructions and links their syntactic, semantic, and information structural properties to their prosodic characteristics. The study also shows that focus particles present a particularly well-suited subject for the investigation of the modularity of grammar in general.

Die Arbeit liefert ein systematisches Bild der Syntax der deutschen Modalpartikeln. Nach einer detaillierten Beschreibung ihrer syntaktischen Distribution in Bezug auf andere syntaktische Konstituenten folgt eine genaue Untersuchung ihrer illokutiven Funktionen. Dabei werden die Bedingungen für ihre Lizenzierung in Haupt- und Nebensätzen in Betracht gezogen. Als sprecherorientierte Elemente setzen Modalpartikeln das Vorhandensein von illokutiver Kraft in der Äußerung voraus, in der sie vorkommen. Ihr Auftreten in bestimmten Typen von Nebensätzen wird daher als Beweis der "root properties" dieser Sätze erachtet.
