Abstract

"The college experience is increasingly positioned to demonstrate its value as a worthwhile return on investment. Specific, definable activities, such as research experience, first-year experience, and experiential learning, are marketed as delivering precise skill sets in the form of an individual educational package. Through ethnography-based analysis, the contributors to this volume explore how these commodified 'experiences' have turned students into consumers and given them the illusion that they are in control of their investment. They further reveal how the pressure to plan every move with a constant eye on a demonstrable return has supplanted traditional approaches to classroom education and profoundly altered the student experience"--

Abstract

Kalman Silvert highlights the extraordinary career of an extraordinary man―one of the founding architects of Latin American studies in the United States, a major builder of the inter-American scholarly community, and an influential figure in US-Latin American relations.Thirteen distinguished Latin Americanists discuss Silvert’s role as scholar, teacher, mentor, colleague, public intellectual, institution builder, and philanthropist. They also emphasize his contributions at the Ford Foundation, where he served as senior program adviser from 1967 until his death in 1976. Coeditors Abraham F. Lowenthal and Martin Weinstein frame the retrospective, underlining the integration of Silvert’s multiple contributions and the continuing relevance of his legacy.

Abstract

In 1949, in the aftermath of a devastating war, Eric Birley organised the First Congress of Roman Frontier Studies. His aim was not only to pursue the study of Roman frontiers but also to take a step towards restoring harmony in international relations within this field of research. The pattern was set early on: the exchange of information, networking and friendship. These three elements remain at the core of the approach of those organising and attending the Congress. They are reinforced by the pattern of the meetings, usually held every three years. The programme includes not only lectures but also visits to the local Roman military sites led by appropriate specialists.Over the 73 years since the First Congress, membership has grown enormously with more lecture theatres and more coaches being required every meeting. This publication marks the twenty-fifth Congress at Nijmegen in the Netherlands, a city well known to Roman frontier archaeologists and early medieval scholars alike. It aims to help newer members understand the body they have joined; for those who have been attending for longer, it will be a reminder of friendships made and strengthened; for all, the book hopes to be a spur to continuing investigations and research into Rome's greatest monument, its frontiers; for the moment of publication, it will be a celebration of the twenty-fifth Congress of Roman Frontier Studies.

Abstract

This investigation of five Western criminal justice systems reveals startling similarities in recent sentencing policies. The authors contend that a trend of penal populism - criminal justice policies designed to appeal to the public appetite for retribution - has done little to reduce crime.
