Abstract

This book provides a methodological framework to set properly the thermal enhancement and energy efficiency in historical buildings during a renovation process. It describes the unique thermal features of historical properties, closely examining how the building materials, structural elements, and state of conservation can impact energy efficiency, including sample calculations and results. It also describes means and aims of several fundamental steps to improve energy efficiency in historical buildings with an experimentation on a case study. This timely text also introduces leading-edge technologies for enhancing the energy performance of historical buildings, including the potential for integration of co- ad tri-generation though micro-turbines, photovoltaics and solar collectors and their compatibility with architectural preservation. • Discusses the unique considerations for energy efficiency that are necessary when planning preservation and update work on historical buildings; • Provides tools to help undertake such projects, including methodological frameworks, sample calculations, and the results of technical feasibility studies; • Includes one complete case studies from work recently conducted on a listed building.

Abstract

This book discusses the effect of different school building rehabilitation strategies on the classrooms’ indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and presents a multi-objective methodology for school building enclosure optimization combining artificial neural networks and lifecycle costs. The special features of this book are that it (a) presents the state-of-the-art in school building rehabilitation, (b) covers the IEQ assessment of several school buildings, including non-rehabilitated and rehabilitated according to different strategies; and (c) proposes a multi-objective optimization procedure. The rehabilitation of a school building should be regarded as a procedure combining a number of (sometimes conflicting) variables and objectives, including energy, IEQ and costs (initial, operational and maintenance), in the search for an “optimum solution.” The main benefit of the book is that it discusses the main topics related to school building rehabilitation, presents results of the IEQ assessment on 9 school buildings and launches a discussion on how the “in-use” performance of schools is key to understanding how designed performance is actually experienced. It maps the most commonly used multi-objective algorithms and artificial neural network architectures and proposes a methodology for combining these numerical tools with dynamic building simulations and lifecycle cost analysis to optimize school building enclosures. This methodology will be of value to scientists and engineers alike, while also addressing a variety of related disciplines, such as civil and mechanical engineering, architecture and mathematics.

Abstract

Defect Action Sheets have been published by the Building Research Establishment since 1982. They provide information on common faults in house building, how to avoid them and advice on remedial work. They have become popular with architects, surveyors, site managers and others concerned with improving the quality of new and existing housing because of their concise and authoritative guidance. This manual brings together over 130 of the published Defect Action Sheets, grouped together by subject (walls, roofs, drainage, etc). The sheets were originally published as single A4 sheets. In this Manual, the two sides of the original sheets are placed side-by-side so information on a single topic can be seen at a glance. A numerical list of all the Defect Action Sheets is included as well as a contents list and a comprehensive subject index. Defect Action Sheets were compiled by the BRE Defects Prevention Unit, consecutive sheets often dealing with "design" and "site" aspects of a particular defect. They were originally developed to provide local authorities with information on how to avoid common defects in house construction, but they are directly applicable to all types of housing, both public and privately owned, and to other building types. The advice given is based on authoritative information available within the Building Research Establishment and frequently also on site inspection and assessments. Everyone concerned with new and existing housing should find this manual a useful desk-side source of information and advice. This book should be of interest to surveyors, architects, builders, consulting engineers, private companies and local authorities, and public and specialist libraries.

Abstract

The renovation of old buildings can no longer be seen as a necessary evil that costs money and summons inconvenience yields. The recognition is growing that the renovation of buildings and its facades, also called the "envelope", can provide significant benefits. Not only does it improve the quality of living and use, also does it lead to energy savings and an increased value of the building. This makes renovations interesting for owners, users and architects. This book reports on the exchange of ideas between science and practice. This resulted in different strategies for the renovation of the envelope and examples of successful projects.

Abstract

This book gathers a selection of papers presented at the 4th International Scientific Conference “Environmental Challenges in Civil Engineering”, ECCE 2020, , Opole, Poland, held on April 20-22, 2020, in Opole, Poland. The chapters, written by an international group of experts, report on advanced finding in structural material behaviour, and novel construction technologies and procedures, with a focus on strategies to foster sustainable civil engineering. Offering a good balance of theory and practice, and covering both technical, as well as legal and organization aspects in civil engineering and architectural projects, this book offers extensive information on the state-of-the art and a timely snapshot of current challenges in planning construction projects and structural interventions in accordance with the principles of environmental protection.
