Abstract

Africa is the leading region in the world in the expansion of mobile money transactions, according to Global Findex. The book presents several significant themes and African states' efforts to address the political and economic factors influencing budget allocation to women-oriented programmes and projects in African communities. The book further investigates the impact of gender-responsive budgeting on women's empowerment and gender equality in these communities. The findings intend to analyse the effectiveness of the countries' approaches and share lessons that different African economies, whether currently booming or struggling, can enhance or implement toward gender budgeting response at all structural levels. Gender budgeting is an important tool in response to the growth and development of the economy. The themes identified will guide gender budgeting response, and how gender is incorporated into these approaches (if at all). The main objective of this volume is to understand different processes of gender budgeting in response to gender issues at a national level. And to help encourage reflection on what lessons could be learnt between states and what factors cause divergence in multilateral settings so that they can be understood and hopefully addressed.

Abstract

This edited collection aims to demystify the interconnectedness between the factors and actors involved with innovation and entrepreneurship development in sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) informal economy. This is set against the backdrop of a rising population and decreasing opportunities for white collar jobs, as well as the continent’s limited access to resources. Exposing the underlying motivations in Africa’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, particularly in the informal sector, the editors argue that there is a significant knowledge gap, which this book seeks to fill. It concerns institutionalization, motivational factors, the harnessing of innovative potentials of Africa’s informal sector entrepreneurs and their supporting role in achieving a more sustainable African region. By identifying patterns of domesticating entrepreneurship theories and showcasing the latest research, the book covers a wide array of topics discussing a multidisciplinary and multicultural perspective to entrepreneurship theory and practices in Africa. In this way it contributes to the goals of SDG 9 (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation) in Africa. Ayodotun Stephen Ibidunni is Senior Lecturer and Head of the Business Administration Department at Chrisland University, Nigeria. His research interests are Strategic Management, Operations Management, and Entrepreneurship in developing economies. Abstract

“This lovely book gives us the opportunity to gain insight into a leadership journey in which one needs to know how to listen to the OTHER.” –Augusto Paulino Neto. President of the Engineer Angolan Association “An inspiring study on community building, shared values and transformative cultures in an African society.” –Dr. Michael Onyebuchi Eze, Lecturer African Philosophy, Leiden University “The book serves as an invaluable guide for African and international leaders, providing insights into crafting novel management approaches based on a fusion of values.” –Manuel Quinaz, CEO at upK, SA This book examines the challenges of intercultural management in sub-Saharan Africa. It presents a case study of Vasco Silva, a Portuguese businessman who established a successful business in Luanda, Angola. After four years of growth, Silva encounters a culture shock due to a wild strike by his employees. He embarks on a deep cultural exploration using the Hofstede 6D model and the Toyota-management tool Genchi Genbutsu (go and see for yourself). Gradually, Silva gains an understanding of effective leadership in the Angolan context, unraveling important features of local culture and initiating an organizational change project. This work contributes to the ongoing discourse in African management literature, particularly regarding the integration of modern and contemporary traditional organizational and leadership concepts. It responds to the demand for descriptive accounts of hybrid case studies of confluencing cultures. Scholars of African management philosophy and business leaders can utilize this case study to explore indigenous African notions in a business setting, demonstrating the performative characteristics of local leadership forms and the adaptability required for success in foreign business environments. Abstract

Businesses in African countries continued to face crises due to COVID-19, supply chain, and climate change. Governments can take steps to increase businesses’ resilience by supporting and promoting sustainable development. In turn, businesses can increase their resilience by promoting the resilience of their employees. This book explores the current state of management and resilience in African nations and discusses issues that revolve around its reciprocal impact on global business, government, and society. Featuring select papers from the 4th Annual Current Business Issue in African Countries (CBIAC) Conference held in Agadir, Morocco in 2023, this book focuses on the synergies between climate change, supply chain and sustainable development, particularly post pandemic featuring content from business and NGO leaders, faculty, and students. The impetus of the CBIAC conference was the discussions held at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) held in Nairobi, Keyna in July 2016 and in Bridgetown, Barbados, and Geneva in October. The goal of the conference is to create long-term collaborative relationships between business leaders, faculty, researchers, students, and community members from different African nations.

Abstract

In an increasingly globalised world, an understanding of the diversity in the concept and practice of employee wellbeing, how it is presented, experienced, regulated and contested, is particularly vital. This contributed volume presents studies from African, Asian and South American countries to paint a picture of employee wellbeing in the Global South, including the commonalities and points of difference across that broad context. The chapters not only capture the significance and impacts of contexts and cultures, but also, the different institutional environments that enhance or suppress employee wellbeing in employment relations. With a critical lens, this book explains how assumptions should not be made of employee wellbeing without a knowledge of the regional, national or local context. It will be of great interest to scholars and students of HRM, work and employment and international business. Abstract

The rise of artificial intelligence is having a profound impact on human resource management, as AI is being used to automate a wide range of HR tasks and functions, from recruiting and onboarding to performance management and compensation. However, the impact of AI on HRM is not evenly distributed. Due to a variety of factors, the Global South is lagging behind the Global North in terms of AI adoption, creating a widening disparity in the effectiveness and efficiency of HR operations. This edited book explores HRM, artificial intelligence and the future of work in the Global South. It addresses key elements of how technology is transforming the workplace and people management, including HR automation, robotisation, big data analytics, smart systems, virtualisation, AI, machine learning and the Internet of Things. The chapters offer a collection of cases from various Global South countries, draw on various types of research (empirical, review papers, conceptual and theoretical) andincorporate contextual issues such as technology, politics, culture, ethics and economics. Despite the relatively slow adoption of AI in the Global South compared to developed nations, its potential impact on the future of work remains significant, particularly in shaping the role of HR as a bridge between technology and human resources. This book will be a valuable resource for scholars, students and policymakers interested in the future of work in the Global South, as it brings together critical insights from scholars and practitioners from the region, providing a much-needed perspective on this important issue. Abstract

This edited collection examines the impact of new technologies and new managerial and policy perspectives on entrepreneurial development in Southern Africa, paying particular attention to small and medium sized enterprises, which contribute significantly to GDP and employment, but often find it difficult to survive beyond the first five years. Chapters are divided in two parts, the first covering technological perspectives and the second managerial perspectives. Africa’s cultural and geographic diversity is taken into account, with authors from Ghana, Lesotho, South Africa and Zimbabwe providing regional case studies and the editors synthesising these discussions in a concluding chapter that touches on sustainability and development to working lives and livelihoods across the region. Exploring critical issues of entrepreneurial human capital development, innovation, technology, legislative frameworks and marketing strategies, this book will be of great interest to researchers, students and policymakers. Patient Rambe is a Professor of Entrepreneurship and the Director of the Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Studies at the Central University of Technology, Free State in South Africa.
