Lucius Domitius Alexander, Vicar of Africa rebelled against Maxentius, and proclaimed Emperor by his troops, ruled between 308 and 310 A.D. His reign, poorly documented, has never been deeply studied, and his coins, extremely rare and widely forged suffered the same shortage. This study has therefore the double purpose to re-examine in detail all historical aspects of the reign (dates, extent and context) as well as numismatic questions (types, political meaning of reverses, chronology and volumes of strikes).0It is highlighting, for instance, the originality and rich diversity of Domitius Alexander's production. It also shows the very special links between Carthage's mint and the first issues of solidi in Trier, which chronology should probably be reviewed and placed a few months before the generally accepted dates. The study then provide a new catalog of types in replacement of the outdated RIC, a corpus of the 205 known coins (genuine coins as well as forgeries), a corpus of identified dies and their links, and finally a detailed inventory of inscriptions in Domitius Alexander's name.

This detailed biographical narrative reveals how the greatest emperor of Late Antiquity transformed Christianity from a persecuted minority cult into an established majority religion, and changed the pagan state of classical Rome into the Christian empire of the Byzantine era. Assessed within the context of the third century crisis and fourth century revival of the Roman Empire, Constantine emerges as one the most astute political leaders, great field commanders, sincere religious reformers and extensive imperial builders among the long line of Roman Emperors. The author's comprehensive knowledge of the literary sources, and his extensive research into the material remains of Constantine's reign, mean this volume provides a more rounded and accurate portrait of the emperor than ever before. Extensively illustrated and fully documented, 'Constantine and the Christian Empire' is a landmark publication in Roman imperial, early Christian and Byzantine imperial history.

Constantine: Religious Faith and Imperial Policy brings together some of the English-speaking world’s leading Constantinian scholars for an interdisciplinary study of the life and legacy of the first Christian emperor. For many, he remains a "sign of contradiction" (Luke 2:34) whose life and legacy generate intense debate. He was the first Christian emperor, protector of the Church, and eventually remembered as "equal to the apostles" for bringing about the Christianization of the Empire. Yet there is another side to Constantine’s legacy, one that was often neglected by his Christian hagiographers. Some modern scholars have questioned the orthodoxy of the so-called model Christian emperor, while others have doubted the sincerity of his Christian commitment, viewing his embrace of the faith as merely a means to a political end.

Drawing on recent scholarly advances and new evidence, Timothy Barnes offers a fresh and exciting study of Constantine and his life. First study of Constantine to make use of Kevin Wilkinson’s re-dating of the poet Palladas to the reign of Constantine, disproving the predominant scholarly belief that Constantine remained tolerant in matters of religion to the end of his reign. Clearly sets out the problems associated with depictions of Constantine and answers them with great clarity. Includes Barnes’ own research into the marriage of Constantine’s parents, Constantine’s status as a crown prince and his father’s legitimate heir, and his dynastic plans.
