Lavishly illustrated with more than one hundred and fifty color reproductions, MarcChagall is the first full-scale survey of the artist's work in nearly twenty years. An introductory essay by exhibition curator Jean-Michel Foray contextualizes the Russian-born artist's work, while a heavily illustrated chronology of Chagall's life assembled by Meret Meyer Graber and Jakov Bruk details the many stages of his career. The work is organized into four sections, each with an introduction by Foray, to help make sense of the aretist's prodigious oeuvre. Marc Chagall is one of the twentieth century's favorite artists, known and admired for his rich palette, his inventive approach, his accessible subjects, and the rich traditions behind his work. Combining fantasy, spirituality, and nostalgia with a distinctive modern painting style, Chagall's canvases are infused with a joyous, dreamlike simplicity. Even as styles chifted from Cubism to Suprematism to Surrealism, his work remained individual and idiosyncratic - sometimes harming his art world reputation, but never his popular appeal.

"This collection of key paintings, which accompanies a retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, is particularly notable because the paintings have been selected to show Magritte's influence on the art of the latter half of the twentieth century, especially Pop and Conceptual art. An essay by art historian Siegfried Gohr explores some of the major themes in Magritte's work, while more than sixty color plates tantalize the viewer."--BOOK JACKET.

"Timely and provocative, SOFT POWER is an exhibition about the ways in which artists deploy art to explore their roles as citizens and social actors. Appropriated from the Reagan-era term used to describe how a country's 'soft' assets such as culture, political values and foreign policies can be more influential than violence or coercion, the title SOFT POWER suggests a contemplation on the potential of art and offers a provocation to the public to exert their own influence on the world...." -- An exhibition of recent work and new commissions by 20 artists from around the world organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. These artists understand themselves as social actors, question their responsibility as citizens and are active in their role as public intellectuals and provocateurs who use their platforms to engage directly in social, political and environmental concerns or to highlight them in their work. As such, SOFT POWER demonstrates art's 'soft' ability to showcase ideas and send them into the world. --

In the early 1970s, Lew Thomas set out to disrupt photography in San Francisco. Tired of the mystical thinking and emotionalism that had underscored Bay Area photography since the 1940s, Thomas pursued a photographic practice grounded in ideas gleaned from conceptual art and Structuralist philosophy. A cohort of other photographers, including Donna-Lee Phillips and Hal Fischer, embraced Thomas' mission, joining him in what became known as the ?Photography and Language? movement, named after a book and group exhibition of the same title produced by Thomas in 1976.0Thomas, Phillips and Fischer were all extremely active in the mid to late 1970s. In addition to making their own artwork, they published essays, reviewed shows and organized exhibitions. Under the name NFS Press, Thomas published a number of books designed by Phillips, including 'Structural(ism) and Photography' (1978), which featured Thomas? work; 'Eros and Photography' (1977), which was edited by Phillips, and two books of Fischer?s work: 'Gay Semiotics' (1978) and '18th Near Castro Street x 24' (1979).0Published in conjunction with an exhibition featuring photographs by these three artists that will be on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art January 4 ? August 9, 2020, this volume assesses their work, their relationship to one another and their place in the history of photography in the 1970s.00Exhibition: SFMoMA, San Francisco, USA (04.01.-09.08.2020).
