Splendor and degradation are the marks that centuries have placed upon the ancient land of Babylon. Its history has been too often neglected because of the many enigmas that have baffled scholars since the time of its fall. The significant relationships of our own modern culture to that of Babylonian life, have recently been a much debated subject ; and archaeology, while offering some solutions, has brought forth even stranger puzzles. Unfortunately only a few outdated works have sought to trace the still-living history of Babylon. "The greatness that was Babylon" is the successful attempt to remedy this neglect, being the first work to give an accurate and detailed view of Babylonian history. Each aspect of the great civilization of Babylon and Assyria-religion, economics, politics, art, literature, social mores - is carefully examined and vividly described. Beginning with a basic cultural history of Mesopotamia before 2000 B.C., the author traces the developments of the people to their peak of cultural achievement, and then follows their rapid and tragic decline. Based on a first-hand knowledge of both primary and secondary sources, the book includes sections on the rise of Assyria, the neo-Babylonian empire, the reign of Nebuchadrezzar, the code of Hammurabi, the pattern of Sumerian society, health and psychology in Mesopotamia, together with many other topics that have previously been disregarded. Brilliantly reconstructing a lost culture, the author overlooks nothing in his analysis and evaluation, "The greatness that was Babylon" presents the Babylonians as living people - eating, drinking, worrying, worshipping, making love - and it succeeds in presenting the reader with an integrated and lucid picture. It gives a balanced statement of the various views, which exist about the history of Babylon. The historicity of the Biblical flood, the unique quality of Mesopotamian art, the relation of Babylon to the Old Testament, and even early Babylonian chemistry are also dealt with in detail. Along with numerous illustrations, the book contains a full and valuable bibliography.
