The aim of the thesis is to analyze the identity that prevails in Mary Elizabeth Blake's travelogue, A Summer Holiday in Europe. For this, we examine Blake's narrative in relation to American travel writing, Irish travel writing and female travel writing. Since we are dealing with a travelogue, we also comment on the origins and causes of the rapid success of the genre of travel literature during the last decades of the nineteenth century.
