Since noneconomic interest groups are important for a fair and equal interest intermediation process in Western democracies, studying the bias in their membership numbers is crucial to explain the discrepancies in the representation of different interests in the political process. This book provides important insights into the determinants of group membership by capturing factors from different analytical levels, establishing an unprecedented analysis of the membership development of noneconomic interest groups in Germany over 29 years. Contents Noneconomic Interest Groups, Membership, and the Question of Bias Explaining Interest Group Membership The Measurement of Membership Analysis of Endogenous and Exogenous Groups Implications and Outlook: Group Membership, Mobilization, and Bias Target Groups Researchers and students in the fields of political studies and sociology Practitioners in the fields of political communication, association management, and political representation The Author Marie Elisabeth Zeidler is a research and teaching fellow at the Department of Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany.

Spiders are often underestimated as suitable behavioural models because of the general belief that due to their small brains their behaviour is innate and mostly invariable. Challenging this assumption, this fascinating book shows that rather than having a limited behavioural repertoire, spiders show surprising cognitive abilities, changing their behaviour to suit their situational needs. The team of authors unravels the considerable intra-specific as well as intra-individual variability and plasticity in different behaviours ranging from foraging and web building to communication and courtship. An introductory chapter on spider biology, systematics and evolution provides the reader with the necessary background information to understand the discussed behaviours and helps to place them into an evolutionary context. Highlighting an under-explored area of behaviour, this book will provide new ideas for behavioural researchers and students unfamiliar with spiders as well as a valuable resource for those already working in this intriguing field.

"Real Recognition investigates the complexities of literary and social recognition with the aim of putting a fresh, cross-disciplinary spin on reader identification and social acknowledgment. Engaging with contemporary Danish and Anglophone works on racialization, disability and gender, Marie-Elisabeth Pihl argues in favor of a close relation between aesthetic appeals to recognition and the political dimensions of literary texts. Moreover, she proposes a framework bent on experience and relations, as opposed to identity and status, for articulating new fruitful understandings of how literary texts call for aesthetic and social recognition. Based on this, she argues that literary texts can make readers get what social acknowledgment is all about - and thereby help us redefine a key concept in the social sciences"-- Provided by publisher.
