The articles collected in the book offer insights on major aspects that determined the success and development of the ”ius commune”, progressively spread out across Europe, and from Europe to those parts of the world that felt the influence. Three prospects are hereby taken onto account, in a time span of seven centuries (XII-XVIII): the consilia of Jurists, the training paths in universities (texts, literary genres, doctrines, teaching and teachers) and the canonical science.

The essays gathered in the volume, thanks to a long series of in-depth studies, have resulted in a closer look at many crucial milestones in the history of European legal and political philosophy, both from the perspective of the common ”ius commune” (civil and canon) and in particular rights of the individual jurisdictions. Analysis of strictly theoretical aspects are analysed along with reviews on the subject of specific and concrete experiences; also stories from books and texts have been analysed as elements of solicitation of cultural debate.

The researches accounted in the volume, being reported by historians who had different vocations, illustrate various aspects of medieval and modern history (laws, economy, society, church and civil institutions, architecture, art, urban planning); they are focused on single town realities and limited geographical-political areas. Among these, particular attention ought to be given to the city of Siena and its territory, which constitute one of the centres of interest for the illustrious scholar to whom is dedicated the series of four volumes, which the present also belongs to.
