Abstract

Geodesy is the science dealing with the determination of the position of points in space, the shape and gravity field of the Earth and with their time variations. A consequence is that geodesists feel as a permanent subject of research, the detection, analysis and interpretation of spatial deformation as well as gravity field variation. This book collects 36 selected papers from the International Symposium on Geodetic Deformation Monitoring held in Jaén (Spain) from 17th to 19th March 2005. The main topics covered in the symposium were: mathematical and statistical models for crustal deformation analysis, deformation monitoring from GPS and InSAR data: analysis and geophysical interpretation, geodetic monitoring of movements in civil engineering, integration of spatial and terrestrial techniques in deformation studies, geodynamical applications of gravimetric observations and present-day geodetic instrumentation for deformation monitoring. This volume is a good overview of theoretical matters, models and results.

Abstract

Since the first works introducing the aluminum intercalated clay family in the early 1970s, interest in the synthesis of pillared interlayered clays has increased tremendously, especially research into the properties and applications of new synthesis methods. The need for solids that could be used as cracking catalysts with larger pores than zeolitic materials has spurred the synthesis of new porous materials from clays. This book reviews the properties and applications of pillared clays and other layered materials used as catalysts, focusing on: - the acidity of pillared clays and the effect it has on catalytic performance - the use of pillared clays as supports for catalytically active phases, and the use of the resulting solids in environmentally friendly reactions - the comparison between the reactions of pillared clays and anionic clays.

Abstract

This volume reviews the drinking water treatments in which AOPs display a high application potential. Firstly it reveals the typical supply sources and limitations of conventional technologies and critically reviews natural organic matter characterization and removal techniques, focusing mainly on AOP treatments. It then explores using AOPs for simultaneous inactivation/disinfection of several types of microorganisms, including highly resistant Cryptosporidium protozoa. Lastly, it discusses relevant miscellaneous topics, like the most promising AOP solid catalysts, the regime change of Fenton-like processes toward continuous reactors, the application of chemometrics for process optimization, the impact on disinfection byproducts and the tracing of toxicity during AOP treatments. This work is a useful reference for researchers and students involved in water technologies, including analytical and environmental chemistry, chemical and environmental engineering, toxicology, biotechnology, and related fields. It is intended to encourage industrial and public-health scientists and decision-makers to accelerate the application of AOPs as technological alternatives for the improvement of drinking water treatment plants. .

Abstract

"Many processes in materials science and engineering, such as the load deformation behaviour of certain structures, exhibit nonlinear characteristics. The computer simulation of such processes therefore requires a deep understanding of both the theoretical aspects of nonlinearity and the associated computational techniques. This book provides a complete set of exercises and solutions in the field of theoretical and computational nonlinear continuum mechanics and is the perfect companion to Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics for Finite Element Analysis, where the authors set out the theoretical foundations of the subject. It employs notation consistent with the theory book and serves as a great resource to students, researchers and those in industry interested in gaining confidence by practising through examples. Instructors of the subject will also find the book indispensable in aiding student learning" [Publisher] "This worked examples text is primarily intended as a companion to the second edition of the text book Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics for Finite Element Analysis by Javier Bonet and Richard D. Wood. However, to be reasonably self contained, where necessary key equations from the text book are replicated in each chapter" [Publisher]

Abstract

"Designing engineering components that make optimal use of materials requires consideration of the nonlinear static and dynamic characteristics associated with both manufacturing and working environments. The modeling of these characteristics can only be done through numerical formulation and simulation, which requires an understanding of both the theoretical background and associated computer solution techniques. The first book in the series Nonlinear Solid Mechanics for Finite Element Analysis considered static behaviour whilst this second text extends the subject to dynamics. By presenting nonlinear solid mechanics, dynamic conservation laws and principles and the associated finite element techniques together, the authors provide in this second book, a unified treatment of the dynamic simulation of nonlinear solids. Alongside a number of worked examples and exercises are user instructions, program descriptions, and examples for two MATLAB computer implementations for which source codes are available online. The dynamic version of the statics book program FLagSHyP is based on a displacement formulation and an innovative dynamic program PG DYNA LAWS is presented for the solution of problems expressed directly in the form of a system of first order conservation laws. While this book is designed to complement postgraduate courses, it is also relevant to those in industry requiring an appreciation of the way their computer simulation programs work" [Publisher]
