Une somme incontournable."--Page 4 of cover.

This book examines the power held by the French medieval queens during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and their larger roles within the kingdom at a time when women were excluded from succession to the throne. Well before Catherine and Marie de’ Medici, the last medieval French queens played an essential role in the monarchy, not only because they bore the weight of their dynasty’s destiny but also because they embodied royal majesty alongside their husbands. Since women were excluded from the French crown in 1316, they were only deemed as “queen consorts.” Far from being confined solely to the private sphere, however, these queens participated in the communication of power and contributed to the proper functioning of “court society.” From Isabeau of Bavaria and her political influence during her husband’s intermittent absences to Anne of Brittany’s reign, this book sheds light on the meaning and complexity of the office of queen and ultimately the female history of power. .

Funerals were among the most extravagant princely ceremonies in Europe. At the end of the Middle Ages, they were grandiose affairs, carefully recorded, bringing together the emotions of both Court and People. The Renaissance heightened their effect, adding surprising elements borrowed from an Antiquity which was largely re-invented. The seventeenth century introduced ephemeral displays, elaborately constructed castrum doloris, dressed up with lavish facades and interior designs which transformed these sanctuaries into theatrical funeral pyres. Historians, anthropologists, and political scientists have long been interested in this subject, as can be seen from Ralph Giesey's celebrated work Le Roi est mort. Art historians have been attracted to the surviving decorations of tombs and funerary chapels. Yet historians of spectacle and of its ephemera have, hitherto, somewhat neglected a topic which is — nonetheless — at the heart of their concerns: with their elaborate settings, their costumes and decors, princely funerals challenge theatre and opera. It is within this context that experts from many disciplines attempt to trace the evolution of funeral ceremonies, which were much less static than is generally believed; to expose the gifts of the masters of these solemn occasions (and, indeed, of their predecessors, the heralds) who constantly devised subtle ways of capturing the attention of spectators and moving their emotions. These essays have tried to cover not only a wide time spectrum but also to reveal the variety and range of such ceremonies devised in diverse European Courts as well as unravelling the innovations which underlay fashions which had multiple international repercussions. This proceedings volume gathers selected, blinded peer-reviewed contributions presented at the XXIX International Joint Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IJCIEOM), held in Lisbon, Portugal, from June 28th to 30th, 2023. This volume focuses especially on the applications of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management for research and practice. It includes relevant information for academics since most of the chapters focus on real-world case studies and systematic reviews. It also provides valuable insights for professionals in the industrial sector by presenting solutions to complex industrial challenges. The 2023 iteration of the IJCIEOM conference had the theme "Developing resilience in Industrial Engineering and Operations Management" and aimed to analyze the resilience of supply chains in the post-COVID-19 era. The works published in this volume focus on how Digital Transformation (DX) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have made the manufacturing and service industry more resistant to VUCA elements (i.e., volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous). Regarding DX and AI, the research specifically focused on supply chain management, project management, and Industry 4.0. Other studies explore how industrial engineering incorporated innovative and technological concepts into service and product operations. Overall, this volume provides a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners alike as it presents numerous relevant contributions in identifying new challenges and opportunities for industrial engineering and operations management. This conference was sponsored by renowned international industry engineering associations, particularly the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM), the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE), and the Asociación para el Desarrollo de la Ingeniería de Organización (ADINGOR).
