In this book, activist philosopher and philosophical activist Lieven De Cauter (born 1959) investigates the idea that if we want to avoid collapse, we have to end the Anthropocene era. It might even be, he argues, that the collapse of our current, growth-maximizing system is the only hope for the biosphere. Offering case studies on urban activism alongside reflections on civic action, De Cauter moves from the political melancholy caused by the prospect of climate disaster toward reflections on more hopeful events of our times, such as the resurgence of the commons. From this new perspective identity and heterotopia, other spaces as places for otherness, can be read in a new light. This collection of writings closes with texts on the COVID-19 crisis and biopolitics. This accessible, exciting book of "activist essays" expresses the author's creed: "pessimism in theory, optimism in practice."

'Forms of activism as democracy in the city' is a tiny booklet that sketches a wide panorama of political, urban and architectural activism. The book is an introduction to the course Architecture and Activism taught by Lieven De Cauter and Gideon Boie at the KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture. It is written in collaboration with Léa Denièle and Eneida Berisha. Cinéma Jolia draws inspiration from our text to create a visual representation in three parts of this political, urban and architectural tale. The book is part of the ‘Institution Building’ exhibition by CIVA, in the chapter on Agency, held in Brussels from 27 August to 7 November 2021 and curated by Nikolaus Hirsch, Matylda Krzykowski and Cédric Libert.

What with global warming, the war on terror, extreme political polarization, an unstoppable demographic explosion and migration, anarchy and chaos are becoming parts of our world system in hitherto unprecedented ways. What to call the planetary state of emergency we are now entering--a "New World Disorder," perhaps, or "Entropic Empire"? In his latest book, the Dutch philosopher, art historian, writer and activist Lieven De Cauter suggests that an entropic empire is created by opposing forces or philosophical poles: the "state of exception" (tyranny) and the "state of nature" (anarchy). Entropic Empire: Considerations on the Planetary State of Emergency is part post-historical sci-fi scenario and part philosophical consideration on the eternal return of prehistory (the "state of nature"). For De Cauter, the simple but troubling question is: are we falling out of history?

"Art and activism in the age of globalization" takes the measure of contemporary activist art. Is it a relevant practice or a pseudo-activity in the margins of its politics proper? What is the position of art and activism in the post-Fordian society of the spectacle? The book makes space for a critique of engagement as pose, but also for the present era's urgencies. Besides case studies by established figures such as Steven Cohen and Christoph Schlingensief, young pubs like Renzo Martens and Les Chiens de Navarre are also given a platform. There are also investigations into urban activism and the activism of anonymous networks, and there is special consideration for the effect of the 'War on terror' on activist practice.
