Abstract

Abstract Introduction One of the most common symptoms in patients with an infarction of the heart is angina pectoris or chest pain. It is a deep, substernal, visceral pain, described as aching or pressure, often with radiation. This pain is managed through different actions like pharmacological treatment and reperfusion. Method Scientific, evidenced based literature, procedures and protocols are used to give an answer to the research questions. Most literature was found using the search engine Limo. The theoretical model Steps of Bakker and the IMRaD-structure are used to elaborate the case study. For the patient analysis the date base program IBM® SPSS® was used. Results Pain management in patients with a STEMI is performed through pain assessment and treatment. The assessment consists of the ‘subjective’ assessment and the ‘objective’ assessment of pain. The subjective assessment is observing the patient and using pain scales like the VAS, the NRS and the faces scale. The objective assessment is done by observing the vital signs. (Ministério da Saúde, 2003). Treatment is done with reperfusion therapy and medication. For a STEMI, this is via fibrinolytic drugs, percutaneous intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass graft surgery. For pharmacological treatment nitrates are used (Sweis & Jivan, 2020). Discussion Pain management in patients with a STEMI is done by pain assessment and treatment. In the case study that was analysed we see that there was done an urgent PCI which wasn’t successful. The chest pain was still present after the PCI, so nitrates were administrated to manage the pain. The keywords are STEMI, AMI, PCI and pain management.
