Abstract

Hans J. Wegner (1914- ) is one of the architects and designers who - with designers such as Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, Borge Mogensen, Verner Panton and Poul Kjaerholm - made Danish design world famous. The book provides a glimpse into the world of Wegner. It opens with a tradition, based upon the handicrafts and a world where people made their own tools as good craftsmen. It closes with a world where Wegner's furniture has become industrial design, and crafts-based production has been replaced by industrial manufacturing. Wegner works with many different materials, old and modern. Yet, as no one else he understands the nature of wood and the possibilities and limitations which this family of materials represents. In the book, Wegner explains the basic ideas and goals which he pursues in his designs and the process by which they come into being. Here, Wegner hands over a torch to a new generation of designes whose training rarely, if ever, is based upon the craftsman's knowledge and skill. The topic is design in wood, but not only that. The ideas which Wegner describes are valid way outside the field in which they were created. They are as vital and relevant as ever.
