The book deals with the new media studies, a broad interdisciplinary meta-field of studies focused on social theory and research into what is usually referred to as the new media. The main goal of the book is to summarize historical and epistemological roots and developments of the meta-field and, consequently, to formulate a theoretically-based concept of the new media. The concept is conceived as a three-dimensional model derived from Anthony Giddens's structuration theory. The three mutually constitutive dimensions of the model include uses of the new media (action), techno-textual artefacts, and contexts (both playing the roles of structures). This concept of the new media should serve as a non-reductionist explanatory framework enabling a theoretically grounded and holistic empirical analysis of the new media as a comprehensive phenomenon involving artefacts, social action and wider cultural, political and economic milieus.
