Abstract

This book is about the making and unmaking of socio-cultural differences, seen from anthropological, sociological and philosophical perspectives. Some contributions are of a theoretical nature, such as when the »problem of translation«, »the enigma of alienity« or »queer theory« are addressed; other contributors throw light on contemporary issues like the integration of Muslims in Norway, identity-forming processes in »Creole« societies or »neo-traditionalist movements« and »identity« in Africa. Moreover, the book deals with »strangers« looked at from an »anthropology of the night«. Special emphasis is placed on how globalization and the rapid spread of ever new technologies of information have generated ever new patterns of inclusion and exclusion, and how these can be theorized.

Meisjes en wetenschap is een haalbare formule, vindt de auteur van deze publicatie. Hoe krijg je jongeren in het algemeen en meisjes in het bijzonder warm voor wetenschapsvakken? Volgens de auteur, zelf lerares biologie, door te vertrekken van hun interesses en nieuwsgierigheid en af en toe af te wijken van een onderwijsprogramma dat van 'bovenaf' is opgelegd. Zij wilde terug levendige discussies over wetenschap in haar klas. Niet alleen kennisoverdracht, maar ook een actieve deelname van de leerlingen. Haar leerlingen kregen in de lessen biologie een opdracht om na te gaan welke de gevolgen zijn van prenatale tests. Zij kregen hierover niet alleen de theoretische kennis mee, maar door middel van een rollenspel werden zij ook geconfronteerd met de ethische en psychologische vragen die hierbij kunnen ontstaan.
