This publication by the World Health Organization outlines the target product profile (TPP) for developing a low-cost test for use in bacterial meningitis outbreak response and surveillance. Bacterial meningitis continues to pose a significant global health threat, with Neisseria meningitidis being a major cause of outbreaks. The document emphasizes the need for rapid and affordable diagnostic tests to identify meningitis-causing pathogens to ensure timely and effective vaccination responses. The target audience includes suppliers, researchers, and procurement agencies involved in developing and selecting diagnostic assays for surveillance purposes. The TPP aims to guide innovation by defining minimal and preferred criteria for new diagnostic products, considering access, equity, and affordability at all stages. This updated TPP expands its scope globally and focuses on surveillance rather than patient diagnosis.

This publication by the World Health Organization outlines a comprehensive framework for resilient surveillance of respiratory viruses with epidemic and pandemic potential. The framework, termed 'Crafting the Mosaic,' aims to enhance detection, monitoring, and response strategies for emerging and re-emerging respiratory viruses. It emphasizes the integration of various surveillance systems and technologies, such as electronic health records and rapid testing, to improve public health interventions. The document is intended for global health authorities and policymakers, providing guidance on aligning with existing initiatives and adapting strategies to local contexts. It addresses the need for continuous evaluation and collaboration to strengthen global health security.

This dissertation by Armin Spreco focuses on the development of methods for detecting and predicting influenza epidemics. It emphasizes the importance of early detection to manage healthcare resources effectively during such outbreaks. The work involves preparatory studies assessing the potential of eHealth and pre-diagnostic data sources for influenza surveillance. It also reviews existing detection and prediction algorithms, followed by the development of a nowcasting method. This method aims to provide real-time surveillance by predicting the start, peak timing, and intensity of epidemics using local data. The dissertation targets healthcare professionals and researchers interested in epidemiology and public health.

Bioterrorism is not a new threat, but in an increasingly interconnected world, the potential for catastrophic outcomes is greater today than ever. The medical and public health communities are establishing biosurveillance systems designed to proactively monitor populations for possible disease outbreaks as a first line of defense. The ideal biosurveillance system should identify trends not visible to individual physicians and clinicians in near-real time. Many of these systems use statistical algorithms to look for anomalies and to trigger epidemiologic investigation, quantification, localization and outbreak management. This book discusses the design and evaluation of statistical methods for effective biosurveillance for readers with minimal statistical training. Weaving public health and statistics together, it presents basic and more advanced methods, with a focus on empirically demonstrating added value. Although the emphasis is on epidemiologic and syndromic surveillance, the statistical methods can be applied to a broad class of public health surveillance problems.

This book, published by the World Health Organization, provides a comprehensive master protocol for the surveillance of pfhrp2/3 gene deletions and biobanking in malaria-endemic countries. The main objective is to determine the prevalence of these deletions, which can cause false-negative results in rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria. It aims to guide changes in diagnostic strategies if necessary. The protocol outlines a cross-sectional, multi-site survey designed to identify the prevalence of false-negative HRP2 RDT results and pfhrp2/3 gene deletions among symptomatic patients. The book is intended for public health officials, researchers, and policymakers involved in malaria control and research. It also supports future research and development of health products targeting pfhrp2/3 deleted parasites.

This publication by the World Health Organization outlines the Tricycle protocol, a comprehensive global surveillance strategy for monitoring antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Escherichia coli using a 'One Health' approach. It aims to integrate data from human, food, and environmental sources to track the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli (ESBL-Ec). The document provides a detailed methodology for sampling and data collection at national, regional, and global levels, emphasizing the need for collaboration among health, agricultural, and environmental sectors. The protocol is designed to help countries build robust AMR surveillance systems, enhance laboratory capacities, and support the development of strategies to combat AMR, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The intended audience includes health professionals, policymakers, and organizations involved in AMR surveillance and control.

This operational guide, published by the World Health Organization, provides a comprehensive framework for implementing Early Warning, Alert, and Response (EWAR) systems in emergencies. It outlines the core functions, preparedness strategies, and rapid assessment techniques essential for monitoring and responding to public health threats. The guide is intended for practitioners involved in public health emergency response, offering detailed guidance on data analysis, electronic tools, and community engagement. It also covers the management of signals, events, and alerts, as well as strategies for transitioning from emergency to routine operations. The guide aims to enhance the capacity of health systems to detect and respond to epidemics effectively.
