The aim of this work was the development of new image processing methods for the analysis and optimization of rotary kiln processes. It is shown how the newly developed methods can be employed to analyze certain areas and effects of rotary kiln processes. Thereby gained new process information can be used in the process control to optimize rotary kiln processes in terms of economic and environmental objectives.

This project thesis has been conducted in the factory “Les Nutons” of the leader on the European market of fresh meals and lasagna : Ter Beke. The objective is to optimize the performance of the production line number 6. This report contains 3 parts. The first one is introductive. The company and my mission are presented. The second part includes all the analyses realized during this project thesis. The third section is dedicated to the recommendations and the conclusion. The first analysis presented refers to a review of the current production process of the production line number 6 of the factory. The process is divided into different workstations which are described. The remuneration system and the work system are also detailed. The Overall Equipment Effectiveness is examined and then, a new work system is proposed. However, after taking into consideration the human aspects, the company has decided to not implement currently this proposition. The second analysis details the sales of the different products manufactured on the production line. Different KPI such as the service level and the non-compliant rate allow us to draw interesting conclusions. This analysis brings to the fore the necessity to improve the quality of the sales forecasts and also highlights the impact of an increase of the use-by-date. The third analysis sets up a new production planning. This model allows the company to harmonize the production weeks and in decreasing the total number of runs produced each week, to decrease losses caused by the periods of changes. The last part of this project thesis includes all the recommendations drew thanks to the analysis and observations realized during 6 months. On the one hand, short-term recommendations could be implemented during the next few months. On the other hand, long-term recommendations are referred to more complex and more time requiring decisions.

Founded twenty years ago, Mithra Pharmaceuticals is a Belgian biopharmaceutical company active in the women's health sector. More than ever in full growth, the company is becoming an international player in the contraceptive and menopause fields. Since 2014, Mithra has decided to focus its core activities on research and development. Its innovation activity is mainly directed towards the development of Estetrol, a natural new hormonal substance. With its innovative Estetrol-based portfolio, Mithra intends to market its first flagship product Estelle® by mid-2021. This combined oral contraceptive pill of fifth generation is expected to transform the contraceptive market, which has not seen such an innovation in over 90 years. As a potential future blockbuster with worldwide coverage, it is the subject of high expectations in terms of financial income, leaving no room for mistake. The pharmaceutical industry is subject to stringent regulatory constraints, high product quality requirements and shorter lead-time to market. This all puts a high financial pressure on healthcare companies and stresses their need for a reactive production strategy. The fast-paced launch of generic drugs after patent expiry also strengthen the competitiveness of the sector. In this context, the aim of this project thesis is to develop an appropriate production strategy for the commercial launch of this new contraceptive pill. This work aims at preparing the commercial launch in several ways: first of all, the mapping of the production process will allow Mithra to optimize and improve its efficiency by reducing its manufacturing lead time. Secondly, a strategic and tactical analysis of capacity management planning highlighted the need for alternative suppliers and the need for building safety stocks. This need is further reinforced by the unprecedented Covid-19 health crisis. Thirdly, production planning for the commercial launch emphasized the potential lack of hormone resources. With a limited amount of available hormone material, production will certainly have to be adapted and performed at tight flow, thus impacting the volume produced for the commercial launch. Finally, a comparative analysis of potential logistics providers helped the company to select the ideal partner to support its growth. This project thesis provides Mithra Pharmaceuticals with decision-support tools to best manage its first innovative contraceptive product.

Interest in Business Process Management has grown considerably in recent years. Companies are more and more concerned with improving business operations by, among other things, reducing costs or increasing customer satisfaction. In this perspective, Brunswick Marine in EMEA is seeking to optimize its parts and accessories pricing process. This report presents the results of a 4-month project aiming to provide tools and solutions with a view to improving the pricing process of the company's parts and accessories. This optimization aspires to use Business Intelligence solutions in order to automate data processing and tracking. Indeed, the lack of integration of analytic tools into the current process prevents the company from effectively reviewing prices. Also, it is essential to redefine the pricing process before its implementation in the new ERP, which will be active in a couple of years. The mission was carried out with a project management approach based on Lean Six Sigma's DMAIC method. The approach undertaken was, first of all, to analyze the as is pricing process and its context. Particular attention was paid to the expectations of stakeholders regarding the improvement of the system. Performance indicators have provided a measure of the current performance of the process on aspects such as price realization or time required to perform a price review. An in-depth root cause analysis of the problems was conducted using a Fishbone diagram. Based on these investigations, the timeline related to parts and accessories price reviews has been adjusted. Analytic tools have been introduced into the process to automate data processing. These tools have been implemented on Power BI, which proves the relevance of using Business Intelligence in process optimization. Other solutions such as a harmonization of the discount system or a new product subclassification have been proposed to enhance the operational business of the department.
