Dieses Lehrbuch bietet eine Einführung in die internationale Politik, die wesentlich weiter geht als die etablierten Richtungen des Realismus und des neoliberalen Institutionalismus. Einerseits überwindet es den Staatzentrismus, indem es eher gesellschaftliche Verhältnisse als Staaten ins Zentrum der Analyse stellt. Andererseits entwickelt dieses Buch systematisch eine transnationale Perspektive: nationale Grenzen werden nicht länger als konstituierend für Politik und Wirtschaft angenommen. Schließlich wird hier die internationale Politik einer stark historisierenden Perspektive unterworfen: politische Strukturen wurden durch gesellschaftliche Kräfte ins Leben gerufen und strukturieren umgekehrt auch weitgehend das Handeln dieser Akteure. Der so entwickelte theoretische Begriffsapparat ermöglicht eine kohärente Analyse aller Prozesse ungleicher Entwicklung und zwischenstaatlicher Rivalität im modernen Zeitalter. Mit einer spekulative Exploration des Niedergangs der US-Hegemonie und des gleichzeitigen Aufstiegs Chinas endet das Buch.
