Les enjeux de cette nouvelle science sont porteurs des pires craintes comme des plus grands espoirs. Faut-il donner foi aux promesses de vie meilleure ou aux prédictions de dérives catastrophiques ? Pour répondre à ce problème complexe Jeremy Rifkin propose un tour d'horizon exhaustif et critique des nouveaux produits et procédés issus des extraordinaires découvertes de la biotechnologie, en pesant leurs inévitables conséquences sur l'humanité et l'environnement. Vivrons-nous demain dans un monde de chimères, de créatures clonées, de plantes monstrueuses et de « chimpanzhommes » ? L'abolition des frontières entre espèces végétales, animales et humaines sera-t-elle comme une « nouvelle genèse » ? A l'origine d'un tel scénario, Jeremy Rifkin place la révolution biotechnologique que nous serions en train de vivre : potentiellement, l'identification du code génétique des espèces animales et végétales et l'établissement d'une cartographie des 100 000 gènes composant le génome humain ouvrent la voie à la recombinaison de ces gènes et à la fabrication industrielle de la vie. Sans nier l'énorme apport en matière de santé, J. Rifkin entend surtout dénoncer le danger mortel d'un usage mercantile de la matière vivante. Déjà, certaines multinationales ont déposé des brevets sur des organismes génétiquement modifiés. Assistera-t-on au brevetage, gène par gène, du génome humain ? Verra-t-on son contrôle devenir la quasi-exclusivité de quelques géants de l'industrie pharmaceutique ? L'auteur nous met aussi en garde contre le risque d'une pollution génétique de grande ampleur provoquant la diffusion dans la nature d'espèces modifiées qui rompraient l'équilibre fragile de l'écosystème terrestre. J. Rifkin s'inquiète enfin de la dérive possible vers un nouvel eugénisme, fondé sur la distinction entre les bons et les mauvais gènes : au nom de la santé des individus, suc-comberons-nous à la tentation de créer l'homme parfait, oeuvre d'art de l'ingénierie génétique ? Catégoriserons-nous des individus, des groupes ethniques, en fonction de leurs supposées « erreurs génétiques » ?Documenté, explicatif, mais aussi très polémique, ce nouvel ouvrage de J. Rifkin est avant tout une mise en garde dissuasive contre les pires tentations de la révolution génétique. L'auteur, pour autant, ne se place pas du côté des critiques systématiques de la science et de la modernité : il admet sans discuter que la biologie moderne est une source de soulagement immense pour l'homme, et qu'il faut donc séparer le bon grain de l'ivraie.

This laboratory manual, published in cooperation with the International Society for Transgenic Technology (ISTT), provides almost all current methods that can be applied to the creation and analysis of genetically modified animals. The chapters have been contributed by leading scientists who are actively using the technology in their laboratories. Based on their first-hand experience the authors also provide helpful notes and troubleshooting sections. Topics range from standard techniques, such as pronuclear microinjection of DNA, to more sophisticated and modern methods, such as the derivation and establishment of embryonic stem (ES) cell lines, with defined inhibitors in cell culture medium. In addition, related topics with relevance to the field are addressed, including global web-based resources, legal issues, colony management, shipment of mice and embryos, and the three R’s: refinement, reduction and replacement.
